and put in my window air conditioner. It was in the mid-high 80's today, and tomorrow is supposed to be near 90
Ivo's been laying on the linoleum in the kitchen or on the tiles in the bathroom, so I know she's hot, too.

I have a question for y'all. I inherited this air conditioner when my neighbor moved, and it's way more fancy than my old bulky unit-you can actually set the temperature it maintains. What is a good temperature to start at, keeping in mind I'd like to conserve energy as much as possible.

I had no idea exactly how hot it was on Sunday until I came home after lunch, logged in to AOL and found they were reporting it was 95 (!) degrees. Last night wasn't too bad, but my neighbor and her friends have been extremely loud until all hours of the morning (I did complain to the landlord) so I can't keep my windows open
Ivo is definately enjoying the AC, though. Right now she's sacked out on the rug in front of the air conditioner

It's hot here in Southern Ontario too. I have a window air conditioner and a dehumidifier. If I keep the humidity at around 50% (it climbs up to 70% sometimes) then I can cool to high 70's and feel comfortable. Humidity at 60%, the temp needs to be below 75%. And so on.

Air conditioners work by dehimidifying as well as cooling, so my extra dehumidifier helps is be more efficient.

Eh, I can deal with noisy neighbors, as long as its at a reasonable hour. 9 or 10 pm, OK. 12 or 1 am, not OK in the least

Well we are one of the lucky (ha ha) ones that do not have central air or a set up to use a window air conditioner. I instead relay on shutting blinds before I leave for work and readjusting when I come home. We are luck to have many large trees around our property. And a ceiling fan in our bedroom. If it gets really uncomfortable I can always set up the Aero bed in the living room or the family room. Plus add another fan in the bedroom. I spend lots of time outside anyhow and I really don't use the air conditioner in my vehicle either (I don't try to spoil myself). We've talked about getting a air conditioner system which would have to be installed in out attic as we have no duct work in our house due to electric heat but I figure for the few days we really would need it-well we lasted since 1987 in our house without it!!!!

You know what? We don't really need air con in the UK as it would hardly ever get used. But the last few summers I have been thinking about buying one of those portable units to use in my flat (it's only a 1 bedroom flat on the same level so I am sure that if I keep all the doors to the rooms open the air would circulate around). Do you think this will work?

Last summer where I live all the kids were out playing, screaming etc and it was hard to hear the TV, plus with the traffic noise coming from the main road I really got fed up with the windows open. During the night I just can't sleep when it's too hot and cos I live alone I am sometimes scared to leave my window open
Perhaps I need to teach Guinness to be a guard cat....?

Our power company says 78 degrees is the perfect temperature to "Set it and forget it." Of course, I keep mine at about 74 b/c I like it cool like that

That's what I do now. The AC is in the bedroom, and when I go to work I leave the bedroom door open to cool the apartment. The bedroom always is the coldest room, but then again I like it to be a wee bit cold when I sleep.
