Weaning Problems!!!

Hi, my kittens are now five weeks old and are showing no signs of eating solids. They will drink water from a bowl and have been for a while but are not interested in food. I've tried canned food and moistened dry food but they are more interested in eating the litter out the tray (non clumping). The mother is getting a bit irritated with them now and is biting them a lot for no reason. I know it is hurting them as they squeal.
Can you give me some advise.

Maybe try a different brand of food?
Also, at the vet I used to volunteer at, they would get the mushy canned food (Which was Science Diet) and mix it with a little bit of warm water... not enough so that it's swimming in it, but enough to make it a little easier to eat.
