Should I get involved?

Hey everybody, need some advice. One of my co-workers just told me about a woman on her street who has decided she no longer wants her one-year-old (possibly declawed) cat. Apparently she's tired of cleaning the litterbox.
Anyway, she put the cat outside a couple of days ago, hoping he would just "go away." She's not feeding him, but other neighbors are.

For someone to be so ignorant and irresponsible is beyond me. I'm so torn about getting involved in this at any level. I can't bear to think what might happen to this cat and certainly want to help. I care about the cat, not the person! But, I have my hands full with my own and I know our rescue group is already over capacity with kittens. Also, I'm going out of town in a couple of weeks and have tons to get done before then. I just don't have the time
to take this on, but somebody needs to do something! Please help me decide what to do!

I would have to take the cat on I'm afraid.. I know it's difficult. Can't one of the neighbours keep him?

That's what I'm thinking. My co-worker is going to ask around and get me more info.

I don't know exactly how, but I'd definitely get involved. I'd be worried for the poor kitty's safety, especially if she's declawed- there go her natural defenses now that she's outdoors. Poor baby
Please keep us updated.
Don't get me started on what I'd tell that horrible woman!

Thanks, Amy. I don't know what what to do, but I can't stop thinking about this poor cat. I just asked my neighbor to get this woman's name and phone number, so it looks like I'm now involved.

What an awful woman! How anyone can get 'bored' of a cat and just throw it away is beyond me

Stupid, stupid woman!
How could anyone do that?!!!

I too would have to take the kitty in, but I can see your situation! I hope that you can find a loving home for the kitty and this woman gets reprimanded (not sure if this is the word i'm looking for!
)
for her behaviour!!!

It still floors me how someone can take in a precious animal that loves without condition and just throw it out on the streets when sick of it. She should never be allowed to own a pet!

Bless you for caring so much, and I understand your dilema as I have a lot going on as well. No matter how many litterboxes I clean I would never trade the feeling of having my loving babies look at me with thier sweet faces and those gentle purrs.
I just don't get alot of people now a days.....

Yeah go get the kitty, or contact a rescue group who can help.

I would have to go get the poor thing. It might be a inconvenience as far as timing and your upcoming trip, but things have a way of working out. Bless you for caring about this poor, abandoned baby. Please keep us posted on what happens.

If you don't get involved you will regret it, I can tell from your thread. You are just a good person who loves cats. And if that cat is declawed it is even worse for it to be outside. Poor kitty.

Thanks for getting involved. I could go on and on about the woman, but I know we all feel the same way about her.
I pray that you find a loving home for that poor kitty.

too bad someone doesn't get bored with that woman and throw her outside!
If I was closer my mouth would get me in ALL kinds of trouble in this one! go and get this poor kitty, and give the owner a piece of your mind!

Is it legal to just do that? The animal control folks suggested my mom contact the police when someone did this to our now deceased dog Codi. They just stopped feeding her and eventually let her loose.

No, it's not legal. Abandonment is covered under the Animal Cruelty statute:

http://onlinedocs.andersonpublishing...-h.htm&cp=PORC (Select Title [9] IX - Agriculture - Animals - Fences, then Chapter 959)

§ 959.01. Abandoning animals.

No owner or keeper of a dog, cat, or other domestic animal, shall abandon such animal.

[§ 959.13.1] § 959.131. Prohibitions concerning companion animals.

(C) No person who confines or who is the custodian or caretaker of a companion animal shall negligently do any of the following:

(1) Torture, torment, needlessly mutilate or maim, cruelly beat, poison, needlessly kill, or commit an act of cruelty against the companion animal;

(2) Deprive the companion animal of necessary sustenance, confine the companion animal without supplying it during the confinement with sufficient quantities of good, wholesome food and water, or impound or confine the companion animal without affording it, during the impoundment or confinement, with access to shelter from heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, or excessive direct sunlight, if it can reasonably be expected that the companion animal would become sick or suffer in any other way as a result of or due to the deprivation, confinement, or impoundment or confinement in any of those specified manners.

§ 959.99. Penalties.

(2) Whoever violates section 959.01 of the Revised Code or division (C) of section 959.131 [959.13.1] of the Revised Code is guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree on a first offense and a misdemeanor of the first degree on each subsequent offense.
