Hi, My cat had four beautiful kittens 3 days ago, mother and kittens are doing just fine. Does anyone know if it's safe to give the mother a milbemax tablet for worming, also when is it safe to let her out we don't want anymore kittens, can she have some sort of contraceptive pill? Any help would be great, i keep getting conflicting advice from my vets.

take the mother to the vets for worming, its far safer and they can adjust the doseage to her weight.

dont think we have the contraceptive pill for cats here in the uk yet (think its an injection anyway) but you can get her spayed when the kittens are weaned. dont let her out before then as she can get pregnant right away and if anything happened to her you would have four tiny mouths to feed

now that over...

welcome to TCS!

Where in England are you from?

I'm not far from Oxford - nice part of the world!

I wasn't sure about taking her to the vets as I didn't want seperate her from her babies and I thought the little ones might be too young to go out?

I will keep her in until she has weaned the tiny ones, we don't want any more!!

I'm sure that reading too much can make me more nervous, I'm now concerned that I haven't seen her clean their bottoms and there is no sign of any mess in the basket!! The kittens seem well........one thing I read said they should have big round milk tummies and another article said check they aren't bloated as they might not be passing poo!!
Eeeeekkkkkkkkkk!! Information overload!!

The best way to ensure she doesn't get pregnant again is to have her spayed. Having her spayed will also provide health benefits to her.

If mom is licking and grooming them she is swallowing the feces and the urine which is why you don't see any- but be sure the bedding stays dry underneath this new family, if it gets to soiled, she will remove the kittens to a drier place. Keep her inside as she will go into heat again and want to mate up with a tomcat- I wouldn't worm her without a vet telling you it is okay first- that is just a safeguard for her.

I would wait until the babies are older before seperating them or taking the babies out because a vets office can be pretty germy.

if you wait until they are a month old you can take them for a check up at the same time and find out if they are boys or girls.

even if you worm her now as she is eating the kitten dirt (for want of a better word) she might be ingesting more worms. i'm sure someone else will know if this is true or not.

oh yes, reading to much can make you a hyper-sensative cat mummy. but i would rather be well prepared and neurotic than ill equiped to deal with any problems
