Last year a stray cat (Frank Now) showed up. He's already nuetered, and he was a good 10 - 15 pounds. And he has really heavy breathing. I thinking that it is a disorder, and maybe franks owners before me thought he was going to die, so they dumped him off? Neway, I was just wondering if anyone knows what this could be from? Since I've gotten him he's lost some weight, the vets said he needed to lose osme. But i can't afford to get him tested for all of that. Os i was just wondering if any of you knew what could be wrong and if I can anything to fix it?
Thanx

Neutering him will help him live a long and happier life, especially if he has breathing problems. Tomcats typically get into major fights because they are aggressive and since he already has problems, neutering would be the way to go.

How do you know he is neutered? I would take him to the vet and ask their opinion.

WE recently went through this problem with a stray that adopted us-same thing, he was fixed, too. All of his tests showed up negative, but an x-ray revealed he had a respiritory problem similar to asthma. I don't remember the exact medical terminology, but the vet ended up giving him a shot of Prednisone, plus some of the same in pill form for us to give him. It cleared him up, which was a good thing, cuz he was REALLY miserable. His sides were really heaving.
Taking him to the vet wasn't as expensive as i thought it would be, though. And the medicine is reasonable, too. Hope this helps-let us know!

I have a cat doing the same thing. I've spent $1,200.00 to find out they don't know whats wrong. The next test is $1,000.00. I told them to wait a minute, I'd like to try predisone or an inhaler first. Me-n-my-guys - is your cat still on predisone and how long has it been? Mine is getting pretty miserable. My vets were kinda against predisone due to the fact that is suppresses the the symtoms. Sorry Sadheart I didn't mean to hijack this thread. Have they checked for lungworm?

Hopefully Sadheart can pick up something useful from this.
I'm not totally sure about the lungworm.. I know they checked him for worms, then did a heartworm check, & also the usual aids/leukemia tests, all negative. I even asked if he could have been kicked in the ribs or something & the vet took another look, & that was ruled out. His aveoli (?) showed signs of swelling, & infection, (he also gave us anti-biotics, too) the antibiotics did nothing after like a week, but the Prednisone shot helped over the weekend.
Anyway, this was maybe 2 months ago, the vet said to give him the pills till there is some improvement, then if he gets it again, give him the pills to clear it up again. This morning he was breathing heavy again, so..the saga continues.

Lungworm is just that. Worms that wrap themselves around the animals lungs and I think eventally kill them. Its mostly found in strays and ferals. It comes from eating bugs and such from living outside. Its simple to treat once the test comes up positive. My cat was put on the med. "just in case" it was only $8.00

I had a stray come into my yard back in May, and I neutered him Sept.3...a few weeks later he stated breathing heavy, well, exactly last Friday when it got a little chillier one night, he just started breathing heavy, laying on his side and drooling, he seemed to pull himself together over the weekend and was okay, but on Monday morning he was breathing heavy again and I just had to take him to the vet. I had no history on him, only that he had a broken tooth, and was around 4 to 5 years old....Well he went into respiratory distress again and almost passed away during the x ray. Come to find out there was a lot of patchy infiltrate in his lungs and they were closing on him, I had no other choice but to have him put to sleep as to not have him suffer. Friday night when this first happened at 2am, scared the living daylights out of me...so I went online to find out what the hell could have happened, and I truly believe I found out why...his symptoms were eerily mirrored by this information, and I just want to share this with anyone who might see this....in the end, 73% of males have a stressful event occur (his was getting neutered), in late august, early September, it occurred exactly 19 days from the event, they suggest 21 days, and...I can't remember it all so I hope I can post the info here with my comment...http://www.petmd.com/cat/conditions/cardiovascular/c_ct_endomyocardial_diseases
