My cat just had kittens yesterday and I'm new to this so I don't know how Mama cat should be acting, but she won't stay with her kittens. She'll only lay with them if I'm in the room with her, otherwise she follows me everywhere I go. Obviously I can't stay with her forever, so I was wondering is this normal? and if not what can I do?

Sometimes young mothers or new mothers get overwhelmed. You need to shut her in a room with her babies and keep a good eye on them but not let mom have the luxury of roaming around. They not only need her milk, but they need her warmth and her attention to grooming, otherwise it falls on you to bottle feed and see to all their needs.

Yeah, I agree with Hissy. They need to be confined. When they get older, mom will spend less time with them, and can come out some, but for the first week, she needs to be confined with the kittens to provide warmth, food, etc.

How old is the mama cat? Sometimes, if they are too young they are just not mature enough to know how to deal with kittens. Picture a 14 year old having a baby, they are first of all not ready for it and second of all, they just have no idea the time and effort it takes to raise a baby. Same with kittens under a year who get pregnant, they are just not ready. So how old is your cat?

PS. That's a 14 year old human being I meant

My cat is about a year old so I guess that could apply to her. Thank you everyone for your help. I'll make sure to take all the advice and get her to stay with them.
