"It never rains, but pours", or "Trouble comes in threes"

In your experience, are those sayings true, or is it just me? For the past few days, I've been in a real "funk", because all I seem to get is bad news from/about people I know. My German niece (12) was the intended victim of a child molester on Saturday (luckily she screamed her head off when the guy tried to force her into his car, and people intervened), one of my American nieces' best friends lost her boyfriend in Iraq, I attended a very morose Memorial Day BBQ with a bunch of drunk and angry GIs (which put me in a rather venomous mood), yesterday a friend emailed that he and his wife have split, and today I was informed that Jamie's brother is dead, at age 6. At the moment, I don't want to answer the phone or open my email! Why do there seem to be "clusters" of negative experiences, news, etc.?

I am so sorry things are so tough for you right now
These things seem trivial compared to that but I believe the "bad things come in threes" theory. The other day I went home from work and my air conditioner wasn't working, the pool water became suddenly unstable overnight causing an algae problem (it was crystal clear the night before and when I got home it had spots all over the bottom), and to top it off the kitchen drain was stopped up

Exactly! From August to October, 2001, we had to replace our washer, dryer, dishwasher, and range. (Okay 4, not 3, appliances, but it seemed so strange.)

Well you have had a particularly bad stretch. I think when they pile up it's hard, but also remember a lot of people walk through life untouched by others so it's also a statement that you are actually someons who gives a damn. You should feel proud. Really....

Can't think of specific situations at the moment, but I think if I had a buck for every time I've had occasion to make one of those observations, I could stop working now.

Sorry you're having "stormy weather" at the moment, Tricia, and Tanya. Hope things start looking up right away.

Ah... the "bad things comes in 3's" nightmare. I can sympathize. I'm not superstitious but those bad things DO come in 3's. It happened to me!

First I find out my daughter has a hole in her heart and had to have corrective surgery... lots of sitting up crying wondering WHY and how she'd come through??? (she's fine now)

Then I got Pneumonia; not just regular ol "oops I'm coughing" pneumonia but the viral kick-yer-arse-hospital-stay both lungs kinda stuff. (I'm fine now)

THEN my favorite furbaby on planet Earth almost died, spending a week in the vet hospital. Once again... many tears shed.... (he's fine now)

I was wondering what I did to cause so much pain to me, my daughter, and Snickers. It's not superstition, just circumstance. Stuff Happens.

Chin up there sister. Things will get better. Sometimes these things happen to slap us around a bit and let us know life is GOOD and to embrace every day... even though it seems hard now, you'll be fine soon.

Wow - that's really a lot of serious stuff all at once. I was talking to one of my colleagues today (he asked why I seemed so down, although I thought I was hiding it at work), and he remarked that maybe there is something to the alignment of the planets, etc.. He's not the type to read his horoscope or pay attention to signs of the zodiac, either. I know the moon affects a lot of people and animals, like lunatic Jamie. Who knows?

Anyway, thanks, everybody, for sympathizing. The update on my niece is that although the guy is under arrest, he hasn't been charged yet (that can take days or weeks here). It was two women in their thirties who acted, and they really had their wits about them and got his license number, car make, etc.. My niece is afraid to walk anywhere at the moment. She lives in a small town, population about 5,000, and was walking home from a friend's house at around noon on Saturday. She was only two blocks from home. She did notice the car "trailing" her, but didn't know what to do. One of the women also noticed, and was prepared to act.

My mood has improved. My m-i-l came up with a good idea, which surprised me, because she watches every penny, although she definitely doesn't have to. She asked what I'd bought with the money (generous) she gave me for my birthday, and when I said, "Nothing, yet", she told me to go out and buy something I don't need, think is too expensive, but would like to have, in other words, a "toy". Well, I went out this afternoon and bought myself a new digital camera, 6 mega pixels, with a terrific optical zoom (I don't like the digital zooms, which is obvious from my photos). As much as I hate shopping, it helped. Now I'll have to learn how to use it!

ooo a new camera - what kind is it? I love my new camera - 6mp, with optical zoom as well! Mine's a kodak.

That's great, Tricia! Amazing what a little retail therapy will do for sagging spirits. Your MIL is wise. I'm glad it gave you a lift.

Now you'll have to practice lots. We'll be waiting with bated breath for the results.

It's a Samsung Digimax A6. I did a little research on the Internet before setting out, and several German photography magazines claimed it had the best price/performance ratio. It's fun, but a bit noisy. The zoom is great, but the noise seems to startle Jamie. This picture has been resized (really reduced in size), but it gives you a general idea:

Thanks - everybody has been PMing me about my new siggy. I've been playing around, and just can't figure out how the third picture got a "ghost" or a "cloud" in it. I think I'll leave it as is - in about two or three weeks, I'll get the urge to make another one. I'm definitely making progress - my first attempt at making a siggy (one unfocused Polaroid) ended up with another member cleaning it up and hosting it on her server!
