My cat Sassy gave birth yesterday to five beautiful kittens and did a marvellous job, however, since this morning she has been leaving them in the closet where she had them and been wandering around. Sassy has eaten well and used the potty, which I have put next to her and the kittens. When she left them she found somewhere else to lie down and sleep. A couple of times she has meowed to me, she seems well, but I am concerned she may not be giving the kittens the attention they need. Sassy has returned to them a few times but seems to leave them after a short while. Is this normal, should I be concerned and is there anything I should be doing to help??

Someone more knowledgable will be along, but I have heard that it might be a good idea to confine Sassy and her kittens to a room or smaller location. This will give her privacy as well as get her in close proximaty to the kittens at the same time.

Yes, at this early stage, she should be spending more time with them. Now, when they are sleeping, she might walk away a time or two, but for the most part, she should be spending more time with them as a way to give them warmth. You should confine them to one room, I.E. a spare bedroom, and give them a nice warm place to nest. You might want to feel all the kittens, too, and make sure they are warm.

Being a new mom she could be anxious, she also could have more kittens inside and that can make a cat restless. Confine her to a smaller area with her kittens, sit with her for awhile if you can, just read out loud to her or talk to her. Make sure her litter pans and food and water are accessible but not to close to the family.

Many thanks for all your advice! Sassy has gone back with her kittens now and I shall be keeping a close eye on them all. They are already in the most confined space we have in the house which is in a closet under the stairs, but I don't like to close the door completely as I feel Sassy likes to know that I'm around. Maybe Sassy was feeling a bit exhausted and bewildered after her experience as she is only 1 year old herself and maybe she just wanted a little bit of rest. I hope that's all it is anyway as I was worried that she was starting to neglect them. Thanks again for everyones advice it is so much appreciated, as they are all so precious!!!

Maybe what you can do is get a baby gate and stretch it up in the doorway vertically instead of horizontally. That way Sassy can see and smell you and still have to stay in with the babies. Of course let her out for a short break every now and again-

Sassy is still a little restless and I was wondering how you would be able to tell if there were more kittens inside, just in case? How long after the first litter of kittens could she go before having more?? I'm not sure if this is the reason for her being restless but it's best to be prepared. Many thanks!!!

If you're worried about more kittens, the only way to tell is to bring her to the vet... it's not something to be taken lightly, either. If she starts getting sick real fast, you need to bring her in. She might have an aborted kitten in her.
