It's time. The girls are approaching 1 year and have really grown since I got them. (And the vet thinks their tummies are appropriately sized.) They have only ever eaten Iams Kitten dry and I bought Royal Canin adult. I started mixing in the Royal Canin, which they seem to actually prefer (seems odd to me because kitten food has more fat). They actually nudged away and left some of the Iams kibbles and ate all the Canin. Anyway, I was in the bathroom when Genie was (apparently) going #2. I could smell it MUCH stronger than in the past. Does anyone know if certain cat foods smell more than others? Of the top brands, which ones smell less?

Thanks.

transition was too quick... and yes some can cause extra smell.. but normally it would be more on iams than royal canin.... here is the easy mix way 75% old food 25% new food for 3 days then 50/50 for 3 and then 72 /25 then all new food .. The Canin has more "real meat"

So you prefer Canin to Iams? What is your favorite adult food? Someone recommended Canin to me. They are typical of the breed - moderately active (bouts of sprinting around the house followed by great slumber), typical weight, nice fluffy coats. No issues.

Every cat is different, and some will react with smelly poop, gas, or even diahrrea to even the best food. If the RC still isn't working out for you after you've made the gradual transition, don't hesitate to try something else. (But, again, with a gradual transition)

Roayl canin is not my favorite but it imho is better than I ams..My favorite right now is feline caviar My 15 month old Zoey is still growing but is thin... she seems to be gaining a bit.. I had her on Natural choice indoor by nutro which I loved the ingrediants but it wasnt right calorie wise for her..
I look for no ground corn ,cellulose ,by products, hulls of any kind ... I prefer 1 to 1 meat to grain actually try for 2 meats to one grain..

Do you go to a pet store or a big box like petco or petsmart?? Reason I ask is many different brands carried in smaller stores arent in the big ones

It depends on the cat...some cats will not react to the cheapest grocery store food, others, can be on a premium food but react to an ingredient that does not bother all cats, with the result being gas and/or smelly stools.

I agree that Iams is not my favorite brand, look for a brand that does not use ground or cracked or whole corn, (nor corn gluten meal as it's main or only protein source), avoid a food with animal or poultry digest, soy, imo - any by-product or by-product meal. Preservatives such as BHA/BHT are to be avoided, imo, as well. You want the first ingredients to be actual meat of some kind or at the least a meal i.e. chicken meal, then fish meal, turkey etc.

Premium brands to consider - Innova, Nutro Natural Choice Complete Care, California Natural Chicken and Rice, Innova's new EVO is also one to consider, Felidae, PetGuard, and there are more out there

Do the switch gradually, increasing the per centage of the new food daily until just feeding the new food.
