When God made the world, He chose to put animals in it, and decided to give each whatever it wanted. All the animals formed a long line before His throne, and the cat quietly went to the end of the line. To the elephant and the bear He gave strength, to the rabbit and the deer, swiftness; to the owl, the ability to see at night, to the birds and the butterflies, great beauty; to the fox, cunning; to the monkey, intelligence; to the dog, loyalty; to the lion, courage; to the otter, playfulness. And all these were things the animals begged of God. At last he came to the end of the line, and there sat the little cat, waiting patiently. "What will YOU have?" God asked the cat.
The cat shrugged modestly. "Oh, whatever scraps you have left over. I don't mind."

GOD-"But I'm God. I have everything left over."

CAT-"Then I'll have a little of everything, please."

And God gave a great shout of laughter at the cleverness of this small animal, and gave the cat everything she asked for, adding grace and elegance and, only for her, a gentle purr that would always attract humans and assure her a warm and comfortable home.

But he took away her false modesty.

That is very lovely!!

It puts me in mind of two lovely books we have been introduced to by a cat-person friend of ours. One was a gift serveral years ago, and as far as I know is out of print.

If you ever see "Cat Song" by Andrew Matthews and Allan Curless, pick it up and run, do not walk, to the cash. It is a tale of how God sang cats into existence and then had to find something for them to do, and is full of charming illustrations.

The other, on loan, is "A Cat" by Leonard Michaels, with illustrations by Frances Lerner. Simple, charming line drawings, accompany short pieces, such as

"A cat smells, listens, looks, touches, tastes, and thus, in sensations alone, it discovers meaning. If you lie on the floor beside a cat, it will examine you. No matter how stale, flat, an unprofitable you are to others, you will be meaningful to a cat."

I think Stuart intended that I share this with Rob, but Rob will have to wait, because the cats have just ordered it to give him for Father's Day.

But, I digress -- thanks for that sweet piece.
