I live in Sacramento, Ca and it can get to be over 100 degrees in the summer. My 2 cats have fairly long hair, and though they live inside, I don't know how cool I need to keep my house for them to be comfortable. I am also struggling with the excessive shedding in the house and am wondering if anyone has an opinion on shaving or shortening their hair for summer. Thank you for your wisdom and support!

I live in the Utah desert and have a couple long hairs, I shave purely due to mats.
Last year our AC was out in temps over 100 in a brick building, only one day did it get warm enough for me to be concerned with the cats.

I keep the house temp around 75 year round.

Personally, if I were in your situation, I'd take those cats to a groomer for a summer-time shave.

Did you know that double coated cats and dogs are actually cooler in the summer without being shaved. The coat acts as a natural air conditioner. When you shave you take away that protection from the heat and sun. The best way to deal with summer time heat is to make sure they have plenty of water,a cool spot, and the coat is in good condition.

I live in Hawaii and all of my boys are long-haired cats. As far as I can tell, the weather doesn't bother them much. I never see them panting unless they're running around the house a lot. But then again, we have an ocean breeze. I guess it depends on the area you live in.

This is absolutely true. I live in Utah and have 3 Persian's and never shave them.

For those concerned about matting.... a couple swipes of a brush daily and combing the more vulnerable spots will keep matting at bay. I use the comb around their legs, under their legs (kind of like the underarms) and around the neck and ears. It only takes a couple minutes a day if you keep up with it.
