Living together really makes you learn how to communicate with each other and YES, the true test is a house project! I'm hoping we're engaged by the end of the year...and believe you me, I've waited 31 years...I think everyone and their mom will know when I get engaged!!!!
Chica, you and I are definitely in the same boat!
I'm with ya on the living together thing too!

I'm 45. I'm divorced and have been married twice:
#1 - We stayed married for 3 years until I found out he cheated on me.
#2 - We stayed married for 9 years until he said "married people don't fight" and moved out. (FYI we didn't physically fight.)

My BF and I will be together for 4 years on June 1. I am so totally in love and feel like I have the most perfect sweet kind man. He loves me and the cats. We talk about getting married and both want to, but are not in a hurry.

That's too funny!!! OMG, it's agonizing right now...everyone in our group is either engaged, married or starting to have kids! so if Dennis brings up wanting to buy a boat, jetski or some other useless powertool, I just hold up my left hand!!!!
He shuts up immediately!!!!!!

I never really wanted to get married. I saw my mom and dad marry and divorce EACH OTHER three times!!!!!!!!! I didn't really have a good role model to learn what a marriage was about. I love Shy and I didn't want to be with anyone else so we got married but I would have been fine if we had never married and just lived together.

Honestly, I'm too young to get married and somewhat enjoy living in sin anyway. But when I get older I may try to convince him, really I'd rather be with him than married though.
my husband said he never wanted to get married!

Rob and I have been together 15 years (last Sunday), "without benefit of clergy" as they say, but nonetheless married -- to us, and to everyone who matters to us. I figure if my Dad can accept us as married, there's not a great deal to be added, except a piece of paper and an event.

Would I like the event? You bet. But not at the expense of the relationship. Don't get me wrong. It's solid, but I know what making those vows in a public ceremony would mean to Rob. He's done it once, with no more reason to expect then that he would not be able to keep them than he feels now. It would scare the **** out of him to make a vow under those circumstances. And what that fear would likely do to us is just not worth it. He demonstrates his commitment in every way that matters, so why ask for trouble?

Oh -- me? My first, and I'm not planning on another.

Going on 8 years for us and waiting on our 2nd child to arrive!
Had our son 2 years after we married and are now waiting on our baby girl to make her apperance in Oct!

Would I marry again? I don't know. I guess it would depend on the situation.

I voted once, but it's a bit more complicated than that. I've been married for almost 25 years (silver anniversary at the end of June). Before that, I lived with a guy for several years, and when I wanted to marry my current husband, I found out that I already had a "common law" marriage! My ex was 9 years older than me, a city employee (cop), and since I was a student at the time, he had me listed as his dependent for tax and insurance purposes. That was enough to give us "common law" status! It came as a bit of a shock to learn that we'd either have to get a legal divorce, or prove that we hadn't "cohabited" for an entire 5 years. Luckily, we had split up a couple of times, and when I moved back "home", I changed my car insurance and the address on my driver's license, and still had all the records, so we managed to get things sorted out without an actual divorce. My ex has now been living with a terrific woman for 22 years, and they have a common law marriage. So my answer should properly be "at least 1 1/2 times".
My sister, despite being aware of the problems L. and I had, has also managed to establish a common law marriage with her s.o. in another state. The idea might seem archaic, but it's definitely a good idea to see if the law applies where you live, and what the "qualifications" are.

Never wanted to get married. Will and I have been together almost 16 years now and never saw any need to get married, were very happy just the way we are now.

I hate to say it, but I'm from PA, and common law marriages exist there. You might want to check out your legal status!

I was engaged to someone for 3 years (right out of high school)...and fortunately did not follow through with it. It turned into an emotionally abusive relationship.

Last July, at age 27, I married someone who was a friend of mine in high school.
I hope this will be my first, last, and only marriage.

And for me, cohabitation before marriage was a good idea. I know some studies say that those who cohabitate first are more likely to get divorced, but cohabitation saved me from making a terrible mistake in that previous relationship I mentioned. I think being a bit older helped also. I had no idea what I was getting into at 17-18, much less have an idea of what I wanted in a partner for life. This isn't the case for everyone, but it certainly was for me.

I am not married although Mike and I have been together for almost 4 years (on June 29th) and have been living together for 1 1/2. So it certainly feels like it! lol

I'm sure we will get married... some day. lol But not yet.
