my eldest cat bonnie is very jumpy, this beahvior has only been going on for the last three years or so and she has never ever been hit by me while iv'e had or or anything like that so i'm wondering why she does it.

she will be wandering through the house and come across an object, sometimes something new but not all the time and she will start to walk very slow towards it with her head down and sniffing, as she gets closer she lowers herself more, she also looks very tense while doing this , the first time i saw her doing this i wanted to check if she was okay so i touched her back and whoa! she seriously must have jumped about half a meter into the air

Since that first time she has done it on and off, she will usually get spooked about something around every second to third day although some days are worse than others.

A few times i have touched her when she's doing this and she actually flipped over backwards and i'm not kidding

my husband teases her about it and when he see's her in that mood will sometimes roll a ball her way and watch her jump when it bumps her foot, it is funny sometimes but i do have to wonder why she's doing it...

Poor Bonnie.
What is her age, Felicia? Has she seen her Vet for a thorough exam recently? Have you considered getting a Feliway Diffuser for your home? I keep one going at all times, and it really has helped Sierra to feel more relaxed and more comfortable.

she is nearly seven, i keep thinking of her as younger but she is getting older now. Last time she went for a full check up was over a year ago when she had cystitis from eating too much fish or something, the thing is, she doesn't seem stressed until she gets spooked

What is a Feliway Diffuser? i might have a look on ebay.

Like i said, it can look funny sometimes but the reason she's doing it might not be, the only other problem the vet found when she was there last was plaque on her teeth, i guess she needed to follow teafel's example.

I've seen cats do this quite often..and it is always in the presence of new things...

(well, except for my own cat who thinks he is the little lord of the manor and goes to thoroughly check all and everything out without fear!..I wish sometimes he WAS fearful!)

Have you changed things around in your house? Gotten new things or furniture?
At first I thought you should check her vision as I thought you said she was elderly, not eldest...But she is still young yet...

I just found out that Lovey acts out in strange ways when I change furniture around or add something new...I cleaned my room and got a new bed set and he was grumpy for a week!

Good luck!!

(btw, the Feliway diffuser Stephanie suggested is a diffuser you plug into an outlet that releases a calming pheromone scent to cats...only they can smell it, we can't.
It costs about $25 or so depending on where you get it)

Nothing has changed really, sometimes she will do it if i bring something new home, shoes, dresses, household stuff etc but sometimes if i leave a towel near the bathroom door for example she will do it too even though iv'e had that towel for ages, same goes for various other household items iv'e had for a while

i might buy that diffuser and see if that settles her down (fingers crossed)
