Not what you think
. Really just wondering if anyone has an explanation for this behavior. I lived in the country for almost 30 years, first with my parents, and then on the same property when my husband and I set up a mobile home. Being in the country, you would hear the occasional gun shots as folks would do in some vermin or other (usually snakes, we had more than our fair share of cottonmouth moccasins,) or just target practice. Whenever Melichus or Annie heard a gunshot they would growl, and their eyes would get big. Sometimes they would stalk around the trailer as if looking for the source of it. Reminiscing with my husband I suddenly remembered that the other cats down at my mom's had done the same thing, although in their case it would not be so surprising since they were indoor/outdoor cats. I can't recall any other noise setting them off like that.

Speculations? Maybe even though the shots were hardly right outside there would be some vibrations that were undetectable to us or some such? I just thought it was/is odd.

The only thing I can think of is that it alarms them or they just don't like it. When somoene is mowing the lawn outside my window, both Simmy and Nunny become very unsettled and hiss and run into the bedroom. Loud noises and cats don't usually mix well.

That sounds as logical as anything else I s'pose, although IME most loud noises they don't growl at, they either crouch suddenly, or run and hide. It may be the sharp suddenness of it.

DH says it's because they're all Democrats

If you want to see a cat respond to a noise, just blow up a baloon and work the neck of the baloon to get it started screeching and whistling.

I'll guarantee that your cat will come looking to see what in H*** is going on ! !

If outside, the noise will also stir up agressive Blue Jays.

Cats can hear sound frequencies beyond our range of hearing, but I don't know what frequencies a gun would put out that would cause that behavior.
