I am wondering if anyone has any advice regarding an ongoing problem with a neighbours cat (male middle aged cat) who spends most of his day stalking our cat (older male). He sits outside all the windows and meows at our cat which drives him crazy. He is afraid to go outside most of the time and will only go out if we go with him. He is not a timid cat but nor is he aggressive unless provoked and is actually bigger than the offending male.

There have been a number of nasty encounters over the past few months which have ended in really loud fights and both animlas suffering scratches and bites. Our cat rarely goes outside now and I have spoken to the owner on a number of ocassions about the problem. She keeps her cat inside during the day and only lets him out at night when our cat is safely inside.

However now the problem is that he spends all night circling our house trying to aggravate our cat who gets very stressed out panting at the windows trying to guard his house. The other cat has never actually tried to come inside our house, and he will run away when we scare him away.

Is this just typical behaviour for 2 male cats living in close proximity to each other I should mention that this has been going on for almost 10 months and does not seem to be imprvoving and they do not seem to have figured out how to deal with each other.

Any advice on how to improve the current situation would be appreciated

thnks

Aww, bless your cat's heart. Sounds like the neighbor cat is a bully! Outside of the solution you and your neighbor have come up with, I can't think of anything.

To answer your question, yes. It's very normal, especially for male cats. They're very teritorial and live to patrol their territory for intruders. Male cats cover a large amount of land, and according to that cat, your cat is in his territory. And how dare he, in his mind.

I'm so glad to hear that your neighbor is sensitive toward the situation. I'm sorry he seems to be taunting your cat even at the window.
Aggressive little thing. How nice if they could just be given a talking to and they could understand, lol. I feel for you and look forward to other's responses. Hopefully someone will have some input for you. In the meantime, I'll be thinking about it and will post if I come up with anything.

Is your neighbor's cat neutered? If not, would it be possible for her to get him neutered? Is he well cared for (in your opinion?) Looks in pretty good shape? Good weight, clear eyes, that sort of thing? Is he scared of other humans? Does he run when you approach him? Do you approach him and encourage him to stay around? Have you in the past- petting him, offering him treats etc?

My guess is if you invested in a black light and shone it outside your home at midnight with all other lights off, your home may be lit up like a christmas tree with cat pee on the outside walls. If you see those flourescent telltale signs go to www.urine-off.com and order some product to remove those stains. Sounds like two alpha males vying to be top cat on the block. Personally, based on the fact that you have had these two in fights in the past, I would be more inclined to keep your cat indoors from now on.

The other cat is petrified of people and no it does not get a lot of attention. Its owner is not around a lot and it is always outside as he has no cat door so he has to wait for his owner to some back to let him in...he is always outside making these really whiny sounds, it is not a friendly cat and there is no way you could touch it, he looks interested and then the minute you get close he runs away.

Well if he is afraid of people then take a trip to your local beauty parlor and ask for the cuttings on the floor. Take the hair home and throw some hair around outside where the cat usually shows up. The human scent of the hair should keep him away for awhile anyway, or invest in a scarecrow- it is spendy, but it does work to keep stray cats off the property- it is a sprinkler system that is motion activated-

if he's scared of people could you scatter hair clippings from your local hair salon (i'm sure they'll give it to you for free! lol) around your property.

if he's scared of people the smell might put him off.
