Avatars, siggy's, and profiles - oh my!!

Help me! How can I add a little picture next to my name? Also, when I post, under my name it says "Kitten". Is that pre-determined by how long i've been a member, or what? I figured out how to make a signature, but can't figure out my little picture next to my name. In my User CP I can chose an avatar... one of 5 different color cats... what do they mean?

Sorry for all the jibber-jabber. I'm a noobie just trying to figure this out.

the longer you're here the more avatars you'll have to chose from...cute siggy btw...and the part that says kitten, yes that's how new you are it will change the more you post!
