I have a one year old beautiful female cat called Miso. We have just bought a six month old tom cat, and Miso hates him! She will not go near him and keeps hissing and growling, which is a real shame because hes very fussy and has a lovely temprement.

Does anyone know how i can encourage them to bond? I heard that if i put some of Miso'd pee (!) onto the Toms back, she will accept him. This is more difficult than it seems however, as I never see her go to the toilet! Is there another way to do it- i would really appreciate some help!!

No, not pee-LOL. Some vanilla extract on both kitties-on their necks and on bases of the tails, so they smell the same. Also, the advice is to separate the cats for while so they don't hurt each other and get adjusted to each other slowly. Anyhow, you can't expect Miso to be happy right away, just give it some time. When I brought the second cat home, my first cat was also hissing and growling for a few days, but after that, they are best of friends-so, don't worry-it's very normal for a cat to act that way at first. Doesn't mean they won't like each other in the future.

Thank you so much for that. My fiance and i were worried tha we had done the wrong thing for a while. We didn't want to upset Miso. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again

My cat was also hissing and growling when I brought the new kitty in. I had no idea my normally very docile persian kitty can hiss and growl like that. In fact, my kitty really even meows, he is very very quite. But the hissing and growling didn't last long. Your cat is young, and new kitten is younger, so, they should adjust just fine, I hope. My cat is now very happy to have a companion to play with. Getting a second kitty was the best thing I ever did for my cat.

Actually the placement of the vanilla extract is under their chins, and the base of their tails. You should not introduce two cats no matter what age early. They need time to adjust to each other and the new cat should be in a room all to himself. Also please get your kitten neutered as soon as possible, that will help in the introduction process as well- If your female is not spayed, you need to get her spayed as well. Please do not think of letting these two have kittens together. If you want to have kittens call the animal shelters in your area and offer to foster a litter of orphaned kittens, or a pregnant momcat.

Here is an article about introducing the two

I have four cats, all different ages, so it was hard having to get them all accumulated to living under one roof. But it just takes time to get them to know each other. Something you might want to try is spraying the new cat with your perfume or wrap him in some of your clothes. That way he'll smell more like you and the rest of your home. Good luck!

I have decided that when ChanKahli comes home (Thursday) I will leave her in the cat carrier for about 15 minutes while I get the rest of her room ready. That will give the other three a chance to sniff and spit and hiss and holler with absolutely no chance of hurting ChanKahli. Then I plan to have her in the second bathroom all to herself, her own food, water, litterbox, blanket and toys, but use kid gates to keep the other cats out. I will need three gates, one on top of the other to completely block off entrance by the other cats. They will be able to see, sniff and howl to thier heart's content, but the big ones won't get in, and the little one won't get out. Hopefully that will get them used to each out, and then I can slowly introduce her to society.

I have had Alfie for almost 4 weeks now and at first it was a nightmare! Slowly but surely Jess, my eldest cat, is beginning to accept him - they even "hug" occasionally now too which is so sweet to watch as a few weeks ago Jess hated his guts!

I mean they arent 100%, they still chase each other and stuff and Alfies so little we are aware that Jess is much bigger and might hurt him so we constantly supervise them but with them all we did was small introductions so that each od them knew who the other kitty smell was and over the weeks it has gotten better and better.

I mean they have the occasional spat - but what kids dont eh?

When I introduced mine to each other, I would quarantine the 'new cat' in their own room --- fresh litter box, food & water. Keep them in the room, love & pet on them, get THEIR smell on ME --- and then go back out, shut the door, and let my 'old cats' smell the 'new cats' on me. On my hands, my clothes, etc.

Also they'd paw under the door at each other & check out the scents of each other that way.

My two most recent newbies came from a multi-cat household... into MY multi-cat household! They adjusted extremely well. I left them in the quarantine room for 2 days. The third day, I brought one of my four in, let them walk around & smell each other... and so on and so forth. Then I let the newbies out & let them go wherever they wanted.

There was some adjusting, some hissing, growling... a tad of fighting, but all in all my newbies were very happy to be with me! The only fighting they do now is play-fighting.

I think the key is to get them used to each other's scent. I didn't use the vanilla on the butt thing, I didn't actually KNOW about it last October, if I had I woulda tried that!!!

Also another thing I've always done is use catnip... give them a bunch of catnip & let them play with that. That's how I introduced Hammie to Zorro. They've been inseparable since.

Just to let you know you are not alone. I have a female 1 year old cat named Ginger
right now I am calling her "Miss Crabby Pants"
Recently I brought home a kitten (Haley) which is 7 months old. I did all the things I was supposed to, ie keeping them seperated for a couple of weeks and slowly letting them get used to each others scent . I then brought the kitten in to the main part of the house where Ginger is for a couple of hours each day. I have now finally let them be together all the time. BUT it has been pure hell! Ginger aka "crabby pants" has been hissing and growling at the kitten non stop. She growls and chases him and tries to attack the kitten constantly! Funny thing is the little kitten just looks at her and goes on with his playing. He does not seemed fazed by the attacks. I however, am at my wits end!
Ginger also seems to be getting nastier with little Haley, hissing and growling even more as time goes by. Will this ever end? It has been three weeks now and I am ready to go to the Nut House! PLEASE HELP US! lol
