From a human perspective, it's nasty that the US sinks to these low levels "we" so often accuse others of.
I don't think some of you read this article correctly. From what I understand, this was Britains Sun tabloid that published these pictures and NOT an American paper.
Well, after further reading, I see the New York post also had the pictures. But, I will NEVER be ashamed to be an American!!!! Especially over something stupid that the useless media does. Everyone knows they like to distort the truth and over exaggerate things. It just wouldn't be news if it wasn't all hyped up

I just want to contribute as i saw this title,
i was pretty appaled yesterday at the supermarket because my bf was glued to the newspaper. on the front page was saddam in his white little (well overly big) undies... well i havent been watching tv adn i havent read the article so i have no idea whats going on

actually they think a brit took the photos. hence it being in 'the Sun'.

I really don't care what happens to Saddam. He never cared enough about anyone else but himself when he was in power so I do not respect him enough to care. But I think the issue for me is our relations with that part of the world. I think America has done a poor job of public relations and the more stupid things we do the less people think of us. Those pictures should never have gotten out to the public much less have been taken. I will always be proud to be an American just like I am proud of my family. But that doesn't mean I am not sometimes embarrassed by actions take by my country and my family. Doesn't mean I don't love them any less. And the media. That I could rant about from Newsweek now retracting the story about the Holy Koran being flushed down a toilet to this. What else do we have to look forward to in print? I know it sells but I look at the American headlines and there is nothing good. I wish for every story of violence or humiliation they had to print one of mankinds love and humiliy.

what harm was actually done here? Saddam must had been a little embaressed. thats all. he wasnt tortured, harassed, beaten or raped so whats all the fuss about?

he was just exposed for what he is, a sad old man with naff underpants.

and i dont see how these photos were any worse than the ones released when he was first captured of him undergoing dental checks and mouth swabs?

Well it's more sign of our blatant disregard for another culture, I mean if you come over to someones house for dinner you show more respect for their lifestyle than the US did when we invaded. I can't believe they didn't have mid east scholars on staff to give advise, but I think that was just too nuanced and not the macho approach.

I havent forgot what this man did, and to be honest if it was up to me he wouldn't be here today.

If this picture was taken by a Brit then i'm not ashamed to be British. I just think of all the lives thats been lost thanks to this man and his sons!.

The picture could have been worse?, he could have had his socks on still

My biggest worry about this photo is if our soldiers and yours will have to go through any repercussions because of it. There is still a great number of supporters of his.I also dont think that two wrongs will ever make a right.

Your right two wrongs don't make a right, but it could have been a lot worse?!.

And does his lot need an excuse to be barbarians?!.

These photos don't make me ashamed of being British. What did make me ashamed was the photos that showed alleged abuse of prisoners by people in our Army. Whether they were true photos or not, the fact that paper thought it fitting to publish them at all made me sorry to be human, let alone British.

The fact is that papers do publish photos like this, and people buy the papers. Everyone who's involved is thus tarnished by the contact.

I feel ABSOLUTELY no pity for anything they do to that man. (and I don't like even defining him as a "man")

Ok how do we (US) get in trouble when a LONDON paper publishes the pictures..... I will never understand the reasoning behind these people.

If the photos were taken while Saddam was in U.S. custody, and then made available to the media in any country, most people would assume that they were taken by a U.S. serviceman or servicewoman. I wonder how many other papers were offered the shots?

Good point there Tricia!. The Sun newspaper might be one of the worst as a gossip paper, but i bet they weren't the only ones?!

Cindy, as usual, put it rather succinctly. We're living in the age of globalization, so what does it matter which newspaper published the photos? If we have international media, shouldn't we have international behavioral norms?

OMG folks, it's JUST his underwear. It's not like it's gonna hurt his reputation or anything. For Pete's sake this man MURDERED his own people by the thousands. Do we really care who sees him in his tighty whitey's???? I find it amusing.
