I will be 67 in August. I am one of the "Old" humans that are being debated on this thread.
I used to pilot T-34 aircraft. I mention this because I am not a feeble fool, as some on this thread seem to think older people are....however, every 3 years, I take a driving class called "55 alive" that covers awareness about driving as we age & current driving laws. Traffic has become a nightmare, freeways have become a war zone, so I have made many adjustment to my driving choices, & will continue to do so as I age. Roads would be a lot safer if everyone was required to take a similar class before their renewals.
Ok here goes...this will shock you.
I have a neighbor who is 95. She is an accident waiting to happen. She can hardly see or hear. Here is the part that will really make you angry....California DMV just renewed her licence for 5 years. She will be 100 years old before she is due for another renewal.
This woman is a bright lady who still thinks clearly in most cases but like many elderly drivers in denial, she is not willing to give up her (freedom) right to drive. I called DMV to ask why her license was renewed. I was told, unless a person has a record of tickets & accidents, their license will be renewed for five years...age was not a factor. They said that unless she decided not to drive...they cannot do anything about it. I contacted her family, they are not willing to do anything about her driving.
Dangerous elderly drivers are a problem on our roads but it is also important to remember that many drivers, of all ages
, seem unaware that in the next second they could kill or be killed in their car. Cell phones, eating, makeup, huge trucks with drivers who are aggressvie, rude people who feel anonymous in their cars, are a danger on our roads.
All drivers should be tested, every time they renew their license. It would create needed jobs & make our roads safer.
Also...evey driver should be required to take a renewal course in safe driving & current laws every few years. The classes serve as a reminder that we are all venerable to a split second of inattention or anger that could cause an accident, that could kill or change lives forever.
