My cat, poptart has been throwing up quite a bit today. I went out and bought some Pepto bismol to give him (thats what my vet told us to do a few months ago when we had the same problem, different cat) Now I remember how much to give him, and I am pretty sure Its once every hour until he stops, correct? My mum should be booking a vets appointment for him if he doesn't stop.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

I haven't heard of giving a cat Pepto Bismal. Since is has the same compound as aspirin, I would be *very* careful about giving it to any cat. If you have any doubts about how often, I would stop and call your vet (or an emergency vet if your vet is not available). This website discusses possible dosages and potential side effects:

I would not give any until you clarify the dose with your vet..in the article that I am providing a link to(written by a vet), it clearly states pepto Bismol is fatal for cats and only to be used under direct veterinary supervision. It's use in dogs is another matter. Please call your vet in the am and clarify that they do want you to use this with your cat, in what dose, and for how long, and what you should look for that would tell you it is having a negative effect on your cat.

ACK! Please don't give your cat pepto bismol, and if your vet told you to, then find another vet. Pepto has aspirin in it, aspirin is very toxic to cats. It is safe for dogs to a certain extent but not cats. And good lord giving it to him every hour?!

I read the article. I am going to have my mother call the vets today, maybe she can get more information from them than I can.

We already have a new vet, the vet that told me to give the other cat the Pepto was the shelter vet, that was before we had adopted them.

I did not give it to him every hour, He had ONE dose, and that was it, it did stop him from being sick. He is Okay now, thank god.

Now I do feel horible for giving it to him, crying my eyes out because I could have killed him.. these animals are my life, they mean the world to me, and it makes me angry that someone would tell me to give him something that could have made him seriously ill, or even cause death. Thank you for all the information you have given me, and now I can hopefully pass it on to other unsuspecting people.

Speaking frankly here, some vets just don't know. For example, it used to be perfectly okay to give your cat Kaeopectate when the cat had the runs. But last year, the company changed the formula and now it is harmful to cats and could even be deadly because of the change. Thankfully, my vet keeps up on all on this and he lets me know the minute something changes that affects cats.

We understand that you were doing what is best for your cat and IF a vet knows the cat, the weight the health, Pepto Bismol can be prescribed- but only in a diluted and accurate dose.

You should be cautious of any over the counter medications to give your cat, and that even includes sadly, some products like flea control and shampoos that are made for pets. If you have a concern or a question about what your vet says, than ask another one at the same clinic to see your cat and advise you- or ask the community here. Remember that all you read here is not gospel. What works for one cat does not always work for another, and most of us learned this through trial and error, experience and heartache. I am glad you cat seems to be okay-

My friend got a bichon/min pin mix, and the vets said she had a well formed male. After TWO vet visits she turned her pup over to find no winky there. Some vets need to have their licenses taken away or something.
