Hi,

I'm very concerned about my young cat. I have 2 young cats that we don't know if they are brother and sister or not. We got them from an old farmer that "doesnt believe in getting their cats fixed", We got them at a few months old and have tried for over 2 mos. now to get an appointment to get them fixed. they are approx. 8mos. old now and I have been worried that my female would get bred before I could get her to the vet. Well I think my fears are now realized
, i noticed 2 weeks ago that I could see that her nipples were getting larger, and now she has a large potbelly. She has been wormed and is eating the same as always so I suspect that I didnt see that she was in heat and she got bred immediately upon her first heat cycle. Of course now that it has taken me some 2 months to get the appointment we finnally have one for this saturday but now i think she is bred. Im very worried as I remember when I was a child that we had a female that was just 6 mos old and she got bred and lost all the kittens. What are the chances of my young cat having a successful pregancy. I did not want her to have kittens at this young age and really not at all, I think there are already so many out there that dont have homes. So any way, what is your advise? Am I worried about nothing? what has your experience been as far as the success rate of young cats having living kittens.
thanks.

I would second Gayef's advice...keep your appt for Saturday and talk to your vet. Cats can be spayed even when pregnant.

Definately get her spayed anyways. Hopefully your vet will do it. It may cost a bit more but it will be worth it. You are right about there being too many cats in the world and her being so young...many things can go wrong. CAN go wrong, that doesn't mean it will, you never know...and plus, what if they are brother and sister...

Thank you everyone,

I am going to keep the vet appointment where at the very least the male cat will be fixed and he can give me an oppinon on getting the female fixed. I would hate for her to have problems by having the kittens. I will feel badly if they decide to spay her and she was definately bred but, I also think that they may be born dead anyway.

Again thanks
Melissa

Hello again,

I took my two cats last saturday to the vets and they were both fixed. The vet said that my female wasn't very far along in the pregancy and he decided to fix her that day. Both cats are doing terrific and I'm a whole lot happier knowing that my young cat will not have kittens.

thanks again

Good! I am so glad this worked out for you and more importantly, for your cats. You made the right decision. And if no one has said this to you lately, you are a GOOD Kitty Mommy for taking care of this for your kitties! Thanks for letting us know!

You did the right thing. I'm glad they are both fixed now, and you don't have to worry about a pregnancy again. You deserve credit for putting your cats health first!

I wanted to tell you that I have a mama cat who was 6months old when she had her first litter. She had four beautiful kittens. She was not mine I got her and one of her babies from the lady who found her when she was pregnant. About 6 weeks ago she went into heat. I tried and tried to keep her inside. When I opened the door one night she ran out. Its funny cause I didnt even know she was around, I looked I really did. Well she wound up pregnant. I could not bring myself to get her fixed while being pregnant. I dont feel its right. So she is soon going to be having her second litter. And she is only 8 1/2 months. Anyways, the point to my rambeling was that she had four healthy kittens when she was only 6 months old. So I dont see why yours couldnt!!!

Teresa...everyone's situation is different....she was concerned not just because of the age of the cat but because her 2 were related. I commend her for making that decision.

I don't believe in killing cats that already born but in this country it is happening at an alarming rate.

I would highly recommend that you get your cat fixed after this litter.
