Teufel is finally getting neutered this week, But i am terrified about something going wrong!

What should i look for when i go t the vet? What if she doesnt speak english? how will i know s/he will take good care of my baby?

How many hours before his neutering does he have to stop to eat and drink, and how many hours after his neutering can he start eating and drinking again?
how long will he be drugged up for?

Will he be as outgoing as he is now after his neutering?

Will he know there is something missing??

I cant bear it to know if he might have to stay there over night

Bf keeps on trying to change my mind about neutering but i told him that i am a responsible owner
and we dont want the house to smell really badly do we...

aww
im just soo terrified!

I know that this can be a worrying time, Guin was done in January last year and I took the whole day off work for him. Can you request an English speaking vet? That might help bring across your questions and concerns. Remember, they do this all the time so I am sure it is very rare that things go wrong and they will take very good care of your baby. Perhaps visit the vet office first to see what it is like to put your mind at rest?

I think that with Guin, he was not allowed food from 6pm the night before - they will tell you all this, but your cat is not going to starve. Afterwards, they can drink straight away but food should be something light like boiled chicken otherwise they might be sick if they eat too soon

You know what? The only thing that was different about Guin is that he has stopped trying to mate my arm!
Apart from that, I would say that he became more loving. He still has his own little personality

I took Guin in at 9am and collected him at 2pm on the same day so I don't think an overnight stay is vital
Be prepared that your cat might be groggy when you get him home - the drugs etc make them sleepy too. I remember Guin trying to walk to his water bowl and he was wobbling all over the place! Plus, prepare a clean towel/bed for him to sleep in as the wound might still be a bit messy so you don't want it to mess your bed/carpet etc

I know that every cat is different, but after 2 days Guin was nearly back to normal, still acting like a looney tune! He had to go back 1 week later to check that everything was healed etc but apart from that, he was fine.

Teafel will be fine, you'll see!

ENGLAND... LAND OF HOPE AND GLORY!
Awww Fran you are doing the right thing by getting Teufel neutered, and he will still be a man no matter what anyone tells you!

With Rosie and Sophie i was told to remove their food at 6.p.m the night before their operation and leave only water, then remove the water at 7 a.m on the day of their operation, but like Gilly said they should tell you all of this at the surgery.

Remember as well the boys surgery is a lot easier than a girls.

Maverick's going in this week too. she's going to be spayed thursday and the kitten is getting his shots.

i wish there was another way to do this like kitty contraceptive pills (imagine having to pill a cat every day though...)

Male neutering is quite easy really. Bijou didn't even have stitches or glue. They basically just pulled the skin back together and let it heal naturally. They said to just keep an eye out that he didn't "overlick" it. The vet said if he was licking MORE than usual to let them know, but he was fine. A bit groggy at first, but we brought him home the same day. They wanted to keep him overnight to ensure that he had no ill effects from the anaesthetic but we said we would keep a close eye on him so they let us take him home.

If anything, my experience has been that neutered males become more affectionate after the operation.

Females are more difficult. We came close to losing little Mika. Because of her birth defect she was more vulnerable to having problems with anaesthetic. Fortunately the vet we have is a special lady and she brought Mika out of it. She said she was concerned for a bit, but it all turned out well.

She did warn us however, that if we ever take Mika to another vet and she needs to be anaesthesized, that we must warn them there could be a problem.

I wouldn't worry Fwan, Teufel will be just fine I'm sure.

No worries darling, your little Teufel should be just fine. I volunteer with a feline rescue agency that has a wonderful spay/neuter program.( www.mewtopia.org )
From June,2004 to April 30, 2005 (less than a year) we have helped to facilitate the spay/neuters of over 1081 kitties. Out of all of the ones we had spayed and neutered, not a single one of them died. (we have a team of excellent vetrinarians who help support our spay/neuter program.) Vetrinarians are well trained professionals, and neutering is a very common surgery, so your little Teufel should recover very nicely.Keep in mind that neutering is however a surgery, and with every surgery there are risks....but his should be minor as long as he does well with the anesesia....usually the ONLY complication I run across when tending to animals who have just been neutered/spayed...is a little diarreah or loss of appetite...both are temporary...just be sure to keep him hydrated after the surgery. Keep in mind the advice that the others have posted ( don't feed them after 7 the night before....and post-operation, feed him something light such as yogurt, baked chicken, or steamed rice...all of which will be sufficient in helping him avoid any kind of diarreah which may occur after anestesia and surgery.) Also, be sure to observe him post surgery a few times a day to make sure that the incision site does not become infected (Be sure to keep it clean in case he gets any litter stuck on him when going to the bathroom.....I suggest using baby wipes ). Also, it wouldn't hurt him to apply a little neosporin to the site of the surgery...it will help to prevent infections. Oh, and a little side note, out of the majority of males that I have helped to neuter...I usually notice that their attitudes become a little more loving and sweeter. With all of that said, good luck with your kitty. I'm sure he will be just fine. And be sure to give yourself a pat on the back
....you are being a very responsible owner by getting your little Teufel altared.
