theres a fat little fledgling with a broken leg in my garden.

we're keeping the cats in (dont think they had anything to do with it) but what else can we do?

i dont think it can fly as it would have flown away by now. but there is no birds nest anywhere in sight

all the vets are closed except the emergency vets so wouldnt be able to take it in until tomorrow.

my dad says if we leave it there the mum will come for it. (she's just flown down to it as i type).

what should i do?

As long as it's mother is still caring for it, it's best chance is to leave it be and keep the cats away if possible.

This time of year a lot of little ones are fledging, and unfortunately, mother nature's design has them flailing about on the ground for about 3-5 days before they get the hang of roosting and flying.
I say unfortunate, because cats know this very well.

Chances are, even with a broken leg (that must be terribly painful), if he survives, he'll be just fine, albeit gimpy, as is.

thanks. the cats show no interest in it (before we saw it out there) but we're keeping them in just in case.

poor little thing, its legs hanging off almost

the bird died.

heard birds screeching so went into the garden and found a pile of downy feathers and blood.

wasnt one of my cats and dont think it was a cat at all because our fences are very high. we have had a bird of prey coming down and killing birds feeding in the same spot the baby was (and where i found the feathers) so think it was that.

poor little thing, wish i had taken it in now

Oh, I'm sorry. There was really nothing you could have done. I'm sorry it had to go so fast.
