My three foster kittens are anywhere from 3-4 weeks old. .they are pooping by themselves, but so far I have found no pee in the litterbox at all.. They will only pee when I stimulate them.. does anyone know when this should kick in?

They are right at the mark, usually at 2-3 weeks they start peeing on their own. Next time you stimulate one, move the kitten over the litter pan and let him pee there. Leave it in the pan and don't cover it. Also be sure the pan(s) are close, and the sides are low so the kitten can get in and out easier. I use paint trays or disposable foil pans for the first litter pan for kittens. That way you can have several and will have no accidents.

I saw the one calico peeing in it this afternoon. But I don't see the other two at all.
They might be doing it and me not knowing.. but I am using a mixture of clumping litter and regular clay litter, and I would figure that it would clump when they pee.

Personally, clumping litter isn't a good idea for kittens. They like to eat litter, and they step in their urine, then the litter clumps under their pads, they chew on that and swallow it. Use regular clay litter only until they get much bigger.

OR they may sit in it and it will stick to their butts and dry there and then that could lead to a really big problem where they can't poop cuz the litter is clumped all over back there. Then you have to soak the area and pull it off then the butt gets red and raw...a mess.

I check on them too often for that to happen.

I never knew that about the clumping litter. I use it for my own cats but they know better and are adults anyway. I was just using what the rescue group gave me to use. I will take but what they gave me tomorrow and go buy some regular then, I don't want them to ingest it.

Hi,

Kittens can usually eliminate on their own by 2 - 3 weeks. They will usually start to crouch or have their natural scratching on floor/area will begin...they will let you know when they are ready for litter box.
Clumping litter works great but not for young kittens. It is true they will try to eat it and that can turn into a disaster. I just got done weaning orphaned kittens and found that regular litter works best until they get taller. Good luck with the little ones.

I agree with the clumping litter...my vet told me that it she has seen cases where small kittens eat it and it clogs the intestines. That was enough information for me to stop using it! My kittens started using the litter box completely on there own in about 4 weeks! Good luck!

Well it looks like they are going tin the box all the time now.. i let them out of the box and put two litterboxes in my room and let them run free. I haven't found any accidents so far.. I will have to put them back in the box at nihgt, cuz I can't sleep with three kittens sucking on my hair and ears, or my neck. x) their teeth are really sharp.. duh
