If a kitten is never taught by its mother to clean itself, will it start doing it instinctively, or will it simply never do it? If I have a kitten who was hand-raised, and I have no other cats, and I keep it sufficiently clean by bathing, is there any reason for it to lick itself??

Most cats will groom themselves weather they had their moms or not. It is just instinct. They may not do it as soon as ones with mothers, but they will learn. When you give them a bath, it is as if you were making them dirty again. They will almost clean themselves dry.
