This is a famous picture from 1925 (cropped), in Manhattan of a mom cat crossing the street with her kitten with the assistance of a traffic cop. http://my.fit.edu/~rosiene/1925cat.jpg

According to my friend Dave who researched it, he says, "(Taken) at the corner of Lafayette and Walker, a copper, officer James Cudmore, is
stopping traffic while Blackie, a momma cat, is crossing the street carrying
a newborn by the scruff with her mouth." He went on to say that, "Blackie had lived in "a castle beneath a desk" at the Atwater Company, to the right-hand side of the photo. She disappeared to give birth which was leftwards, the west side of Broadway, and was returning her litter of five, one-by-one, to her home when the picture was taken."

Dave is a volunteer with Kittykind, www.kittykind.org.

Wow - to think such a picture is still in the archives. I'll bet some of Blackie's descendants are still in NY.

Under the cats, mostly.
awww that's so sweet!! I do know that picture, but I had no idea of the story behind it!
To think there were coppers out there with a heart that big - that's wonderful! Thanks for sharing that little snippet

I love that picture. If ever a picture told more than a thousand words, that picture certainly did. I love pictures from the 1920's. The only thing that kind of makes me sad, is to know that everyone in that picture is probably dead, and in fact probably were dead before any of us were even born.

Dead now, yes, but before any of us were born? You must be pretty young. My grandparents were all born prior to the turn of the 20th century, and I knew all of them in my lifetime, one up until the age of 30+.

That's truly a great photo!!!
Thanks so much for sharing it!

It reminds me of a clip I saw on TV a bit ago where a cop stopped traffic somewhere to let a momma duck and all her little babies pass safely.
