I am going to get one for my next birthday and am planning it now.
I am very indecisive about what I am going to get but know that it will be on my lower back.

Does this spot hurt?
What do you look for in a good tattoo place?
I am thinking all blackwork at this point...Is that a problem?

WHat questions should I ask?
Any other things I should know?

When You get old, does it shrivel up and look faded and icky?
(I am 32..NOT old
)
that is a tender spot, but if you know anything at all about meditation, it's a great way to block out the pain, black is great for tats it will stay nice longer than other colors, the most important thing i look for in a tattoo place is that they are clean! clean! clean! also i always ask to see the work that they have done on others so i can check the quality of their work (most tattoo shops have photo albums of there work)i'm only 29 so i'm not old but i do know that things with very small details can look rather blobbish over time, and tattoos have to be touched up because they do fade...and always put sunscreen on your tats even if you don't use it anywhere else! i will try to get some pics of mine posted

I also have a fear of needles so I had to drink lots of gatorade to keep my sugar level up so I wouldnt pass out! It was worth it though and I want to get another one..lol

the dolphin was my first and you'll never see a real pic of it since its below my bikini line.. lol

This is the link to the Alliance of Professional Tattooists. Their site has some good info, but just because a shop or an artist is not a member, it does not mean it is a not a good shop. You still can't do any better than actually going to a shop and speaking to the artists.

When greasers redid the paint on their cars, often they pinstriped them.. If you like 50's these ought appeal to you. I always wish that I had thought to get a pair on my shoulderblades so they'd look a bit like whispy Fairy wings.
I may still get some accross my collar bones.

these are some typical ones, What i was talking about would be to get something in the same line as 40-06 and then the reverse of it, so that it was a mirror image.

I was readong back through this thread this morning, and noticed something that I felt should be clarified, or you will never find an artist. The entire "gun" or machine as most tattooers call it cannot be autoclaved. The mechanical part that looks like it has 2 spools of thread enclosed in a metal frame would be ruined if it were exposed to steam sterilization. Those things that look like spools of thread are electromagnetic coils. They are often bagged for barrier control, but not everyone does that because it can cause them to run hot. That part does not come into contact with the tattoo, so it does not really matter. The tubes, the part that artist holds on to, and the needles which are on bars that run through the tubes should always be opened in front of you, and the needles broken off the bars in front of you when they are done. The bars can be reused, but not the needles. If they say they do it at the end of the day, or anything but break them off and put them immediately into a biohazard box, chances are that they are reusing those needles.http://www.visible-creations.de/mode...oo-machine.jpg
Here is a link to a picture of a tattoo machine for those of you that have never seen one up close, and are following this thread. They all look pretty much alike, and have since the late 1800s. They were invented by Thomas Edison as metal engravers, and a gentleman by the name of Sam O'Riley electrified them and used them for tattooing. There is your useless trivia for the day!

Thanks to all of you again for the ideas.

I love the pinstriping effect..Very striking and wouldn't be at all too heavy..
I think that would be kind of neat to create the reverse image and then I may perhaps put an archer's arrow (for Sag) somewhere in there..I will have to print them out and put it together and see what it looks like.

Krazykat..I will just have to print your post out and take it with me when I go as I will surely forget all that or get it mixed up and they will then think I was nutty..

I am going to play around and see what I come up with...then I will let you know when I get it done and how it went..It won't be for a few months likely...
My bday is in December but so close to Xmas that I usually get my own present mid year (Summer)...

Thanks again!

Thanks chick!

I couldn't think of a better way to describe the parts they do clave, so I generalized.. though.. I didn't know that those were electromagnets, how cool! I'll tell Jason, he'll be so impressed that I know that now :p

Here is a pic of one on my calf. He is bringing the good camera home and we will get some of the others. We couldn't get a good pic of the cat on my shoulder with my camera. What do you think?

Those are AWESOME!
I would love to get the Virgo symbol on one arm, and the Aries symbol on the other (my rising sign). I'd probably go smaller, but I love the design and the stars around them!
Though I need to get two removed first.

Is that pretty new or do you have some brilliant tips on keeping your skin in tip-top condition! That is a great tatt!

I'm aiming to get my new ones in the next month or so - as an i've finished uni treat and one in memory of my Nana and Grandad! (Nana and Grandad written in Gujarati) I'll just have to top up an my Preparation H before I go!

I'll try to get someone to photography my tatt on my lower back and i'll try to take a decent one of my ankle!

I always love to see the artwork everyone else has!
We need to see more!
