Hi, I'm new to this forum and I have a question regarding one of my cats who was recently diagnosed with renal failure. I'm feeding her K/D dry food like the vet suggested and I just recently started giving her Pedialyte to prevent dehydration. She is a young cat and seems to be doing well despite loose stools and diarrhea. My question is this: what can I feed her other than K/D that won't cause additional stress on her kidneys?

I've been doing research on cat foods in general and I'm not impressed with the ingredients in K/D at all. I've read suggestions about mixing baby food with mixed vegetables. If so, how I would I prepare that? I've also heard about a supplement called Renafood that is supposed to very good for kidney patients. Any and all advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks sharky. I'm desperate for help here because I've learned this disease is progressive and I want to stop it dead in its tracks.

Hi there....best advice I can give - go to this site:Tanya's Page - it is my favorite on the net for information on dealing with CRF.

You can consult the Katkarma Dry Foods List and KatKarma Canned Foods List though the lists have been updated with far fewer products (it was based on response of the companies to her inqueries for up to date stats), the old lists are also still useful I think. It will allow you to compare the values on the prescription food you are currently feeding, to all natural and premium and everyday grocery store brands. You can look for foods with similar values and then ask your vet if it's okay to use them instead (which is what I did with my first crf kitty Patrick).

I also strongly urge you to (if you have not already) consider a support group for owners with crf kitties. If interested, pm me for the name/addy of one.

Best wishes...if it helps at all, Patrick was diagnosed almost 3 years ago, and though increasingly frail (he's turning 18 this month!), he's still a happy kitty who is enjoying life.
