I have two different kinds of exotics. First are my guinea pigs. I know they're not exactly "exotic", but I do have to take them to exotic vets. Regular vets don't know how to treat GP's. I currently have one, and decided to get her because I was so lonely while I was in university, couldn't bring my cat to school with me because she was so old and couldn't adopt a new kitten because my cat was still around.
I also have 4 giant african landsnails. I got them from a friend of mine, who had babies as far as the eye can see. They're good, neat little pets if you like slimy things.

A little over 2 months ago we had 4 ferrets, but since then 2 have gone to the Bridge.
Of the 2 left one is healthy and the other has adrenal disease

Ferrets are so cute and funny to watch
, but they are very suseptable to nasty diseases.

So sorry about your little fuzzballs. Ferrets are such wonderful animals!! My last one passed over the Bridge about 5 years ago, at the ripe old age of 8. I plan to get another one as soon as we have a bigger place.

The first fert I had lost to adrenal disease. The vet didn't know what was wrong with her, so he couldn't treat the problem. (This was about 15 years ago.) The vet tried so hard...he read all he could about ferrets, and finally figured out the adrenal thing. She lost all her fur, up to about her shoulders, before he was able to diagnose her. She died from a blood clot after surgery before she came out of the anesthesa. Best thing...she wouldn't have lived much longer and would have been in pain...she had agressive cancer, as well.
How treatable is adrenal disease these days?

We have 9 feathered kids... a cockatiel, two parakeets, and six finches. All of which Mika would love to have for lunch!

Sooz! I didn't know anyone else had that many feathered kids on here! I have 11 - how did I start? I fell in love with a cockatoo... finally after much research and much contemplation (months) - I got Tyler. He and I adored each other for years.... then I got married.... now he adores my husband and thinks I am something to wipe his beak on.

Thanks!

They have surgery and medicines now. First they do a blood test...the blood test alone was over $300.

The girl ferret who just passed a couple weeks ago had the surrgery last summer and they did another blood test after and they claimed she was 100% cured, but it came back a little over a month ago with a vengence
more surgery wasn't an option and she went downhill fast.

I have four chinchillas.
Two males (violet and mosaic) and two females (standard and hetero beige). I was thrown into chin keeping when my mom brought me a chin that needed a home when I was 12 years old. It's a little young to have this type of animal but I would like to think I was mature for my age. Plus, my parents were very helpful.

My first chin passed quite some time ago and about 5.5 years ago, my boyfriend bought me a new one. The obsession started again.

Chinchillas are great pets if you know what you are getting into. I like that they are clean, don't smell, are naturally curious, and they are really interesting to watch. They are definitely not cuddly pets, though some can be. In general they are more observer type pets.

My cousin has 3 ferrets also. She and her boyfriend just finished paying off some nice size bills for one who had something involving a prolapsed rectum. They drove all over the state to find a good vet for him.

Bunnies aren't all that exotic, but she also has to see an exotics vet. She definintely is not a cat, which makes her exotic enough for me!
