My two year old cat has vomitted a few hairballs over the past several days. However, today, she has been vomitting everytime she tries to eat. It usually is liquid and yellow. She is very hesitant to eat and I have not seen her drink today. Any advice on what to do? Thank you!

The after hours vet in our area won't give advice over the phone. Is this an emergency that can't wait, or can I possibly wait until Monday and take her to our regular vet?

I'm no expert, but it sounds like she could get severely dehydrated... if she can't keep anything down and isn't drinking at all, if it were me I'd be concerned enough to get her there ASAP. I suppose a world of things could be causing it, and my guess is some of them are quite bad. But then, since they can't tell us I'm a complete hypochondriac where the babies are concerned!

So she is not able to keep anything down? if she is vomitting eevery time she tries to eat and is not drinking I would consider it an emergency. Cats do not do well when they don't eat after a few days and it could lead to bigger (and much more expensive) problems.

I called the Emergency Clinic in my area and they told me to take away all her food and water and then to try feeding her a small amt. in the morning. She has not had anything to drink all day today and only ate about a tablespoon of food. They said she won't dehydrate too bad with only one day of no food and water. I am afraid they are not right. I would just die if something happened to her. She is vomitting a small amt. of mucous now about every two hours.

If you feel she is worsening, then regardless of what they advised, take her in and say she's worse than when you called.

I think if she does not stop vomitting, I would not wait until Monday...I know it's now 11 pm your time, so, if she's resting quietly, I'd just take her in in the am...if she's up and vomitting and looks worse to you, I'd be glad there's finally no snow in your area, and get her to the er vet tonight.

You can check her for dehydration two ways:

1. while she is at rest, gently scruff her neck, pinch lightly (don't pick her up or anything, just pinch her neck) hold it for a second then release- if it stays tented up go NOW to a vet- if it folds down into a normal position within a few seconds she isn't dehydrated.

2. Open her mouth and take one finger and gently press it against her gums, release, the gums should pink up immediately. if they stay blanched or white- get her in now-

also if her third eyelid is showing that is a sign of dehydration and or fever

Definitely take her in to the vet and maybe get her tested for Felv. Maybe she has an impaction?

Thanks everyone for your help. She is doing much better today. She started drinking during the night and has had about 2 tsps. of food this morning. She has not vomitted since 9 PM last night. Do kittys get stomach viruses like people?

Yes and when they do they need to see a vet! Seriously she needs to be evaluated if she keeps vomiting, or becomes dehydrated, poops out of the litter pans, or does anything else that makes you feel concerned (even slightly). You also should either start her on canned pumpkin mixed with her meals, or even start giving her a handfull of organic catnip in a bowl- she needs fiber to push her hair through. This is major shedding season- invest in a Zoom Groom and start brushing her several times a day so she has less hair to catch on her tongue and make her ill. IF that is what is making her ill.
