It is with a very heavy heart that I come to this board tonight. I had come home early to give Matilda her medicine and then went to the adoption event...I had thought to take her with me, but wanted to give her one more day with her family. When I got home from the adoption event, she was weaker....so I vigorously rubbed her....she seemed to improve, but was still moving very slowly. I had called the emergency clinic who told me to give her some full strength KMR (I had accidentally watered the KMR down the last time). I went to heat it up in a mug of hot water....came back to find her mother laying on her. When I pulled Matilda out, she was already gone. I have such mixed feelings....would Matilda have survived had I taken her to the adoption event? What if I hadn't left her to make a new batch of KMR? To say I'm angry with mom cat is an understatement and I'm just saddened by the loss of such a beautiful girl. Run free Matilda....free from the pneumonia that weakened your little body.

My heart goes out to you, TNR1..Such a sad story. Please don't burden yourself with the "what-ifs" - I was in my vet's today and there was a similar situation, and the vet reminded us all that kittens are very fragile and despite all efforts, sometimes they don't survive. You obviously did your best, and little Matilda crosses the Bridge with a name and the knowledge that she was loved. Yes, she runs free & happy now. Bless you for all your efforts to save her, maybe you could make yourself a cup of tea and give yourself some hugs, because that is what I would do for you if you were here. You will be in my thoughts & prayers tonight...Susan

When I lost a foster kitten I had all the same what-if type things running in my head. Honestly they don't really go away, but I know that they are futile. Kittens are so fragile, and you gave Matilda more love and care than she might have received otherwise. Hopefully that will make you feel good even as you mourn Matilda. I am very sorry to hear about her death. All my sympathy.

Don't blame yourself - you did all you could, and don't blame momcat - she was obeying her instinct to ignore or even kill a sick kitten so it doesn't endanger the rest. Some things are not meant to be, and Matilda simply did not make it. I am sorry for you - it is always a hard 'what if?'

Kittens are such little things who sometimes have strength beyond our understanding. There are times though when their fragility does not allow them to survive. You did all you could for baby Matilda and playing the blame game serves no purpose as you know. I am sorry to hear of her death - you are in my thoughts

Don't blame yourself and Mama cat was probably doing what comes natural with a dying kitten. You did everything you could.

Katie, love, please don't blame yourself, or even the momcat for this. Nature has a way of weeding out the weakest among us, whether it be humans or animals. From keeping up with her story, I was terribly afraid that she wasn't going to make it, but I knew that if it could be done, you would! {{{{HUGS}}}} hon, and I'm so very sorry!

Katie - I'm so very sorry for you and poor Matilda. She was clearly such a fragile little life. Mum cat was probably doing what we, as carers for our feline friends, have to do sometimes and that is take the decision that it is time for the little one to stop the fight. She was clearly well-loved and you did all you could. It sounds like the odds for this little one were just too great.

Hugs to you and to mum cat too

Thanks everyone. I took Matilda's body to my vet's office..they will bury her. I feel I let her down....she was such a fighter and I do believe she would have made it had she been with someone who could have been with her more often. I cried all day today....I miss her so much.

Please please plase do not blame yourself for any of this. I was just about to respond to the other thread and then got to the end of that one.....and now I am here. You MUST think that you provided care to her in her final days that maybe she would not have even gotten. There were others at the ranch who were also in great need, no? Katie, what an open and giving heart you have, so full of love. Matilda felt this and perhaps she knew then it was ok to go!!!!
She is in peace and no pain, and she loves you for the care you gave her.
She is happy now and you will see this in other forms, I do blieve this soooo much, it has happened for me time and time again and she will show her spirit to you. You are so noble, Katie, a great light!

Where my cats are

I'm sorry this happend to you. But please don't feel guilty! My Glory who was my best friend died because we wern't told that the vet thought she had something wrong with her heart and I spent a lot of time angry with the vet and angry with myself for not knowing. Then when my Tiger got sick we did all we could, but it was only a matter of time. It happens to all kitties and people sometime, we just do our best and give our love. My heart goes out to you tonight. Mooch and Noodles send you little loving purrs too.

When my foster kitten passed away the Vet Tech at the shelter told me she had spent days trying to hydrate and save little kittens, only to have them pass away. It's really awful when it's one of your kittens, but I think some just aren't meant to make it.
Please don't blame yourself.
