I have two new 7 week old kittens. One male, one female. I have had them for a week. My neighbor just brought home two kittens yesturday, a male and a female, about 8 or 9 weeks old. I brought my kittens over to their yard so they could get to know each other. My female walked up to their female and they hit it off great. They smelled each others backside, gently touched each other with their paw and seemed content. Then their male kitten walked over to my female and they seemed to hit it off pretty good too. He was wanting to play though and tried to wrestle and chase but she kinda clamed up and walked away. Again, their male kitten has his tail high in the air, ears front and seems happy, he just wanting to play. Then he walks over to my male kitten and my male kitten bows, hisses and turns sideways. The neighbors male kitten finally walks away and goes plays. A few minutes later my male kitten walks over to him and does the same thing, hissing, bowing, sideways, but this time lashes at him. The other male kitten hisses back and we seperate them. Why did this happen? Aren't they too young to do this? Please help. I want them all to get along and since they are so close in age I was hoping they would end up playing together. Also since they live next door I really need them to get along.

Well you cannot just plop strange kittens down together and expect them to be best buds. There are a lot of methods of introduction but it is usually taking place inside the house. They are way too young to be outdoors anyways. Why don't you just keep them indoors where they belong? There are so many risks outside, from disease, to hit by a car, to eating poisionous things or garbage. It is just not safe. But if you are going to keep them outdoors, just keep doing what you are doing. Bring them together once or twice a day and eventually they will get along fine. Just make sure before you let them out on their own, they are all fixed because they can get fixed at 12 weeks and that will be here before you know it.

Some vets won't fix until 6 months and if that is the case, they still need to all be kept apart from each other because the female can get pregnant very very young if she isn't fixed.

I would keep the kittens inside. As jen said, they are not all meant to just "get along" and there is a necessary introduction process that should take place. But I don't understand why they "have to" get along anyway...
Have all the kittens been fully vetted and checked out?
This should be done asap.
They could contract some serious illness if you insist on allowing them outside and together.

Indoors is the safest place for your kittens. For some reason if you feel you must take them outdoors, it is wise to not do so until the kittens have had their shots and are spayed or neutered. Even if they are indoors together they need to be fixed, otherwise the male will get the female pregnant soon as they will start to mature.

I never take my kitten outside unless I am with him and he has his harness and leash on!

First of all at seven weeks old these kittens should still technically be with mom. They should not be outside until they have their first set of vaccinations, been spayed and neutered and been vet checked. New kittens can bring in diseases, so introducing them to other cats and kittens at this age is risky at best.

Please keep your kittens inside until they have been fixed and had their shots. They should not even go outside until they are around 6 months old or older.
