I'm a private duty Pediatric Nurse. I provide nursing care for infants and children in their home who require 12-24 hour nursing care. They would otherwise require long-term hospitilization. I really enjoy my job.

What a rewarding job, Stephanie! No wonder you seem so attentive and compassionate to all newcomers here

How long have you been nursing? What made you go into ped. nursing as opposed to other fields?
I am on the nursing waiting list..I have a psych undergrad degree and am thinking already about geriatrics or psych...Two much needed fields in my city.

I am a Kindergarten teacher. This is my second year teaching and I still haven not made up my mind on what I think of my job. My job duties seem endless, planning fun and creative lessons, informing and appeasing parents, attending meetings, keeping the kiddos healthy and happy, and ensuring they are getting a well balanced dose of reading, writing, math, science and social studies.

My favorite thing about my job is seeing the span of growth a year can make. I have some kids that didn't know a letter from a scribble back in September, but now they are reading and writing up a storm. Its amazing! Kids also say the funniest things.

Least favorite part: I am in a 24/7 work environment. In order to do my job well you have to be available and constantly thinking about what to do for your students. I check emails from home, work all weekend, and spend many Sundays at my school preparing for the upcoming week.

My fear is classroom teacher burnout so I am going back to grad school next year to learn the ins and outs of being a school technology specialist.

As for coworkers, I don't really see too much of them. I do work with one aid in my room though and she is awesome. We get along so well! For the most part I am just with my kiddos all day, don't see many of the other teachers. Some days I do wish I had more adult interaction. AND I wish I could spend more time on TCS while at work.

I'm currently a server and have been for about a year and a half. For the most part I like my job and my coworkers. I have three managers right now and they are all pretty nice. Most people seem to hate their job there, so that can lead to conflicts and unpleasant personalities just based on the satisfaction level.

I have a BSW, which I'm obviously not using right now. Serving allows for a more flexible schedule while I'm in seminary.

Next semester I will be starting CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) which is basically 400 hours of chaplaincy training. I plan graduating a little late, in two years, and after that pursuing a CPE residency (about 1200 hours) so that I can become a certified chaplain. Eventually I'd like to get an MSW so that I can provide licensed pastoral counseling as well.

I've done one hospital internship and I absolutely loved it. I was assigned to physical rehab, peds/teens, and general surgery- all of which I really loved. My goal is to be a hospital and Fire/EMS chaplain.

Well lately the main thing I do at my job is try not to bang my head against the desk repeatedly!
Actually I do love my job inspite of the challenges. I teach clerical skills for a non-profit agency. Most of my students have a disability of some sort but not all. I've only been at it a few months so I'm learning a lot about how to handle different learning styles and things. I have a great office team though. There are 6 employees at my location, although we are part of a much bigger org. We also help people find jobs, but I'm not too involved with that other than proofreading resumes and cover letters. My mother is one of my co-workers so that is neat. I was afraid that people would think she got me the job, but I had met her boss and she called me to fill the position herself. Two of my co-workers were co-workers of my mother's at previous jobs, so I have known them a while too. I'm thankful for the company I work for. The staff and my students are very supportive to whoever is going through something. My boss is awesome! I'd say every other month or so we have a big lunch where we all make something and pig out. Then our monthly staff meetings are always in some restaurant too. Good thread! I'm glad someone asked!

I am a nanny for a sweet little boy (Jack) that was born premature (2 lbs). He is 1 years old now, and progressing very well. Before being a nanny I was a stay at home mom of two (12 and 13 years old).

I have my own business, and am in my 3rd year. I work out of the home as my store is located online only
this allows me to care for my older kitties with their various health needs...no matter how busy I am, I always have time to give Patrick a treat

I spend my time filling & shipping orders, writing product descriptions for new products, revising my website, doing product research as I look for new all natural treats or cool toys to carry, testing new stuff on Alix - my plump brown tabby inspiration for the biz. I truly love what I do, and cherish the customer notes that I get that let me know when something has been a real hit with their cat.

My former career was 13 years of nursing - 1 year in med-surg and 12 years in high risk labor and delivery, the last few years, I worked 11-7 shift, and then 7 pm to 7 am shift. The night shift was a wonderful, eclectic group of independent nurses, though there were a few I still would love to strangle
.
I burned out right around the time I met dh...something was going to change! I was actively interviewing to go into a local women's health clinic or to work in a ob-gyn office. Instead, I got married, moved to the opposite coast, quit working as an RN, and went from a part-time retail job in a cat collectibles store (that was so charming, complete with store cat) to going into business for myself.

I love it!

I am a registered nurse working at a not for profit outpatient psychiatric clinic. I refill medications, answer questions, field phone calls for the doctors. Also, since we have a lot of patients who don't have insurance coverage, I help complete forms to send to the drug companies to try to get free medications for people.

I mostly love my job. I have 2 co-workers in my office. The other nurse is Jewish, I'm a christian, so we have a lot of fun discussing religion. My 2 oldest kids are the same age as her two, so we have a lot to talk about there, too. Then the third girl is a lot younger, engaged to be married. We are just a good group, so many similarities, yet enough differences to keep it interesting. And we have different strenths, so make a good team. There are about 80 employees total at the clinic. I get along with everyone pretty well.

By the way, if your income meets the guidelines, and you don't have insurance to cover your medications, check out "http://www.needymeds.com/" for the forms!

Enjoyed reading about all the fields of work. I am currently an Aged Care Nurse assistant. I love my job I mostly do nights and I mostly work on the dementia ward, some very funny times and some very sad times but I like to know that I have made somebody's day more comfortable for them and being able to make some one feel OK about them selves is great. But as it is such a hard job I have gone back to school as well so that can get a job as a clinical coder in a hospital or doctors office.

I'm a home health nurse, specialized in hospice and geriatric nursing.

Misty, I have a lot of experience caring for people with dementia, so I know what you mean about it being both rewarding and hard. Believe me, both patients and family members bless you for what you do, even if they don't always say it.

I love my work, and get tremendous satisfaction out of helping dying people make the transition to death in a calm, peaceful manner.

I hate my colleagues and boss, though, and thank my lucky stars that I am out of the office and in the field for 80% of my work.

E - We do get summers off thankfully. Last summer I decided to teacher summer school. I think that is part of the reason I feel so burned out this year. I feel like I have been teaching for almost 22 months straight. This summer I may tutor one students who needs some extra help, and I am also teaching a 2 week refresher class for upcoming 1st graders. So this summer should not be nearly as stressful.

btw...your job sounds like its great. I think I would just love doing what you do!

I'm the accounts receivables gal. I play around with Ed's money and then bill our clients and corporations. It's really a nice job, but it sucks that I have an English degree. The good thing is, there are a total of 2 of us in the accounting dept. And Debbie is only 3 years older than me, so we have lots of fun sitting in our cubicles next to one another.

Oh that's good to hear...get off that treadmill for awhile!! My father is a professor and he goes 12 mos w/only 2 weeks off between Summer and Fall Quarters. I've heard from many that they'd like my job and I am not ungrateful for it - I have a job - and here in depressed Seattle that's great so I am grateful. However, it's nothing like how it seems on the outside. There's constant hand-holding for people who are very unaccountable and spoiled. Every single thing is urgent, or emergency, or now, or crisis, or help! - just that incessant me me me me me now now now now now that you get when you work with extremely wealthy people. The flip side is that I do have a job where many do not still up here after 9-11 and our recession.

Hey! Let's trade!

Hey! Let's trade!
I understand this completely!! The school i work in is in a very wealthy area, and sometimes I think the parents forget that teachers are only human too. Everything is about THEIR child, and dropping EVERYTHING to take care of what that ONE child needs. They wants things done immediately, and each parents wants their child to be at the top and number one. Its a very competitive neighborhood and can be quite a challenge for the poor teachers who have to worry about not 1 but 25 (or in my case 50 -- AM and PM Kindergarten) students.

I would love to trade jobs for a while though! I think it would be fun to take some time off and take a walk in someone else's shoes.
