I am a research scientist in a hematology lab that studies immune-mediated bone marrow failure disorders (where the bone marrow fails to make blood components due to an attack by the immune system. CyberKitten, one of the diseases we study is aplastic anemia). I am responsible for two research projects on my own. Recently, I've been given a more managerial role as the senior scientist in the lab, now that we have over 10 people in the lab. I love research, but the managerial part...it's taking some getting used to, especially when I have to make decisions about spending or technician time. Someone always feels like they're getting the short end of the stick. Overall, I'm satisfied with my job and my boss is interested in keeping me around for a long time.

I'm sort of an admin asst at an insurance agency. Basically I do everything, admin or other. This is not my career goal though. I hope to someday be in market research.

Wow, what a great thread!!

I am self-employed and love it that way. I work with real estate lenders, title and escrow companies as a contractor to process all types of real estate loans. They send me the package of loan documents via email and I print them, take them to the borrowers and witness then notarize the closing signatures. Then I take them back to the lender, title or escrow company and pick up my pay check! I get to work my own hours, set my own appointments and best of all, if I don't want to go to work one day, I don't have to. There is no one to report to if I "miss" a day except myself.

I am getting ready to add a new facet to the business where I will be working with attorneys who will send me Chapter 13 Bankruptcy documents to process. I will be taking a class next Tuesday to learn more about the program, but so far, it looks really profitable for me.

Again, this was a great thread!!

I'm a Lab Technician currently working in a large reference laboratory. We test for heavy metals (Arsenic, Cadmium, Aluminum, Lead, Bismuth, Cobalt, Antimony, Telerium, Thalium, Manganese and Mercury just to name a few). I've been here just about 1 1/2 years. Previous to that I worked in a research lab in the cDNA cloning group under a wonderful Brittish guy with a doctorate. I loved that job but the company has had several large layoffs and is well on it's way under.

As for my current job; I like pretty much everyone I work with directly and most people I know outside of my little department too. I'm known as the upbeat and friendly all the time. Really I just fake it! ARUP is a large company with 1,800 employees though so I can only speak for my little corner of that company! My boss is great most of the time. I get along with him well and he respects me professionally. He's tried to pull a fast one on me recently though and wasn't very honest with me. That damaged the professional relationship in my eyes, and it may take a while for it to heal.

The company is very pro-employee which is nice. We have a very intense employee health program, which is nice. We have a free health clinic (for us and our families) fully staffed with doctors and P.A.'s and it is open 14 hours a day. A pharmacy. We also have a fully equiped gym and 2 excersise physiologists on staff. They hold 15 minute excersise classes every morning and again in the evening, they do personalized work out and diet plans, yoga classes, self defense classes and tons of other stuff. I like to go up and use one of the treadmils during lunch (before I broke my foot). They are always doing things to promote employee well being.

I'm a Graphic Designer for a small Advertising agency in Trenton, Ontario. I design Hotel Guest Directories, Real Estate Presentation Folders, Builders Guides and the adâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s that are in them. I love my job, I really like the people I work with, and my boss is very cool. What I also love is how close I am to work, Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m only 5 minutes up the road…. Itâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s great!

What a fabulously diverse group!

I'm the Administrative Assistant and Marketing Coordinator for a small (20 employees total) Mechanical Engineering firm. I'm front desk, receptionist, personal assistant to the 4 owners, typist, adminstrative assistant to all of the engineers, and coordinate all of the Requests for Qualifications/Proposals with our Marketing materials. Oh yeah, and according to the Vice-President I'm also the "Professional Photographer" on staff.
Instead of paying real pros a couple thousand to take pictures of the projects we've done design work on, I go out and take pictures of them for our website (still under development) and marketing materials. I do like where I'm working now, like the people, and my overall boss is great.

Oh yeah, and I do websites and graphics on the side, including the two in my signature that I do with Christy and Laurie from here.

Sheesh. Oh where o where is a big fat rock I can crawl under?

I'm totally in awe of everyone else. Some people are incredible in their work. I probably have the most ridiculous job on the planet. I'm a PA, Personal Assistant to the creator of one of the largest cruise lines in the world, and his daughter. I handle schedules and appointments, dinner parties, galas, and I design and create all invitations from scratch and keep event files to the precision of a drill sargent; I direct all event planning at a locally moored yacht and 5 international residences; I handle wardrobe items, children's items; I read and answer over 200 emails/phone calls per day for a variety of items -mostly people asking for money or donations or their time/attention to philanthropic causes; I am a social secretary for every single invitation and public appearance, I write advance sheets on people they are meeting at civic, international, or private events so they know who's who. I speak four languages when they travel abroad and read world headlines so I can inform them of what's going on in the world before they get there right down to the weather on the beach. It is not uncommon for me to fed ex a gown to Paris for dinner or write a fax in Chinese to get past the consulate for what they need. One of my closest friends in Seattle works for Bill Gates and she came from Princess Diana's Private Detail Staff.....

Will somebody please hire me so I can find the cure for cancer instead?

I don't think that's ridiculous at all, Elizabeth! Sounds like a fun whirlwind of fun and excitement!!! Think about a cubicle job where you do the same thing day in day out!
Some would kill for your position! (We don't all have to find the cure for Cancer to contribute to the world

I love this thread as I can get a better picture of who everyone is and what they are about...

Personally, right now, I manage an Antiquarian book and small antique store.
We specialize in nostalgia (which are simply the things people "remember" from their childhood, or first date
, etc..)

Right now, the things that are hot are items I didn't even play with or read as they are from the 50's and 60's..However, I adore this period (as well as the art deco of the 20's)...My entire apt. looks like a cross between Leave it to Beaver and Betty Page's bedroom (I collect 50's pinups)

So, we sell things like vintage toys such as Buffy's doll from Family Affair (mrs. beasley), vintage books like Nancy Drews and Tom Swifts or the Bobbsey Twins, GI Joes, tin toys, paper dolls as well as numerous other period stuff from the turn of the century.
We indeed have some beautiful books that I can't even afford (like $300 Winnie the Pooh books, etc. etc.).

I used to be a social worker (I was a Probation Officer and worked for Family Services for 4 years) but I burnt myself out at a young age working on the front line and so took a friend's advice and a HUGE pay cut
But I am much happier being surrounded by interesting things and have learnt alot about antiques in that time.

Currently, I am on a waiting list to go into Nursing.

Wow, this sounds like a resume...Sorry so long!!

I supposetly have a job reserved, which is at the Italian consulate, but i think the chances are deteriorating.. But if i dont work at the consulate, i want to be a nurse, or a councillor (sp?)

I dont work at the moment (because im not allowed to unless its under the table) But this lady at the kiosk, her factory is closing down so she plans to open a italian/english cafe. So i would be making english cakes and cookies and food
while she did the italian one... while i think about it, it must be so great but then again when i think about all the hours to put in for cooking i want to run away

I am a Personal Assistant to one of the directors at a central London based internet company. My job can be busy and stressfull, especially when we are working to deadlines. I prefer to be busy as the day tends to go quickly!

I get on really well with my boss (he is American), we have a laugh and he is a genuine person. As well as the office work that I do for him, I also do some personal stuff for him and his family. Recently I organised their summer holidays to Boston including the flights, car hire and hotel stuff.

I really love my job, (I have been here for 4 years now) but I think that I might start to look for something else and see what happens. I don't want to become too stagnent. I would ideally like to work somewhere local to home but I know that I won't earn as much money as I do now in central London.

Wow what a cool thread! Ok so I'm a hairdresser and makeup artist.I color, cut,and style some of the greatest clients ever! Everyone in my salon is envious b/c they have some real pain in the neck clients, I let clients like this know ( in a nice way) that maybe they should see someone else! I started doing hair on my barbie dolls, and makeup on my mom and aunts.I truly love what I do. My boss should retire asap, and I would really be happy. I would like to teach product knowledge , and techniques to stylists some day but for now I am happy in the salon.

I teach English as a second language to children ranging from 2nd grade to 9th grade. I LOVE
my little 2nd graders, they are adorable and have yet to become annoying brats!
The people I work with are cool, although I don't really have to deal with them much. I like my bosses (I have 2, one a "foreigner" like me and the other is the Taiwanese owner of the school.) I don't mind my job, but sometimes I long for a more "adult" challenge.

I'm a writer for a weekly Catholic newspaper. As of yesterday, I've been here five years. I majored in journalism in college and this is the first job in which I've been able to my degree, so I'm loving it. I get to meet so many interesting people and tell their stories. I love my coworkers and can tolerate my boss. Since I pretty much set my own schedule as long as I get my stories turned in, I have the time to play around on the internet until I get inspired to write!

oh this is fun! i actually do a lot of different things and don't technically have a real job...i custom paint interiors of homes (meaning i don't paint plain walls, but if you want something totally unique done i will do it) i also design and maintain websites i got started with it when my parents purchased their own business and asked me if i could make them a website (you can check it out at www.westsidecatering.com ) this is a job i do from home so i can be with my kids, and i also work at my parents catering business when they need me, my husband is the head chef there and i just go help out now and then, and lastly i make custom made costumes and clothes, anything from renaissance costumes, to halloween costumes, to themed wedding attire, i don't work with anyone, and i like that, i don't have a boss, and i love that!
also i get to be with my kids, and that's the most important thing to me, i wish more moms could stay at home, we have to make a lot of sacrifices to be able to afford it (example: i live in a mobile home not a house) but really i don't care! and because i do custom painting and such once you are inside my home you would never know it wasn't a house!

Eric's mom lives in a double-wide in Oregon and she loves it and it's beautiful. It might not be a "house" but it's sure a home!
She does all her own drapes and wall painting. They've made small upgrades here and there and she has a great deck in back w/corn. I love staying there!!
