What body of water is that Eddie? Don't spend too much time in Maple Valley. Actually now that I think of it I'm not sure if I've even been there.

We are also out in the boonies but our area is quikly getting developed so who knows. Farms are going down right and left and track housing is replacing them. UGH.

Leah I think your area is more boonies than mine, although we are closer to the mountains up in the foothills. I was really into your area! That body of water is is the Howard Hanson Res. up behind us into the Snoqualmie National Forest. When we first moved to MV the postal carrier brought an order form for stamps and supplies to our door. Now that felt rural!

There's no place like home
The closest grocery store to me is 6 miles but it's so small that I drive to the bigger one 12 miles away. I look at hay fields or small woods in most direction. Have sheep, cattle and horses all over the neighborhood.

Here's a link to an aerial view of my house. My house is just to the left of the "T" intersection.

I grew up in Chicago, so my life is "Green Acres".

Well, I'm kind of on a flat, middle of farmland area. When we first bought our house, it had a pretty row of trees running through the yard. I have since learned that they were mostly big old scrub trees, that fall at any big winds! We do have a lot of bonfires after we clean up the wood, though! And we have enough space that they tend to fall, and don't damage anything.

I do find it very peaceful to sit out in the yard, shaded by the trees that are still standing. Even on the hottest summer day, we can catch a small breeze. And I have my outside cats running about and they don't bother anyone. Our neighbors aren't animal lovers, but they know the value of a good mouser, and certainly leave the cats alone!

O-H-I-O!
My parents (the house I grew up in for 15 years) live in the boonies. The closest grocery store is 15-20 minutes away. That stunk when I didn't have a license. Mommy had to drive me to the mall 45 minutes away.

Well, I think that's quite nice! I like that kind of boonies. Do you have coyotes out there? I wouldn't think so. It must be nice to have your kitties out at night with no real worries!

Well the nearest "town" is about 2 1/2 miles away. I really only buy food there if I ran out of something or if company is coming. Otherwise the better shopping is about 20 "county" minutes away (No stoplights!!)

SashaCat, it may be 'loud', but it's so beautiful. I'll take that kind of noise!

Wow! Some amazing places. Quiet and stars are worth all the convenience stores in the world, even on a rainy day!

Actually, we do have coyotes here. The neighbor (dairy farm) say they have lost cats to the coyotes. But our adopted ferals are true ferals, they seem to be wise to the wild critters. And we do have an outside male dog, so he marks the area, and barks if he sees anything amiss. And our house dog is in and out. And we have horses. Somehow, we never see coyotes up close.

But our house cats could never go out. They are very familiar with our dog, and I fear if they wandered off they might be a tasty meal for the coyotes.

I know outside cats have a shorter lifespan than inside cats. It is a sad fact of life. But it is generally safe out here, we are set back from the road. So for ferals, it is a safer place than some. And the tame barn cats stay closer to the house and barns than the ferals, so they of course are safer.

I wish there was a way cats could live wild and free, and totally safe. But for now, I have the safe cats, and the free cats. I try to keep the safe cats happy, with lots of attention. And try to keep the free cats safe, by providing a warm home and good food.
