Bloody discharge

Hello,

My Lily delivered five kittens about 48 hours ago. An hour ago I noticed a blood spot, a little larger than a quarter, on the carpet. Lily was on my lap and when I noticed the carpet I picked her up and there was blood on my skirt too. She is not bleeding now and I wouldn't describe the discharge as "profuse".

This is a first litter for both Lily and me and I'm concerned. With the exception of this discharge, everything to do with the birth and the newborns is going well.

Any words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Joan

I believe I have read that some bloody discharge is normal for days after a cat gives birth. Maybe similar to that in a human? Unless, IIRC, it has green mucous in it or stinks. If that happens you should take her to the vet.

Thanks for your reply. She seems to be just fine now but I'll keep a close eye on her.

Yep, there were a few dime-sized spots of blood on the bedding for about the first week with my momma kitty.

Hi There,

Cats can bleed for up to 10 days after giving birth. So don't worry, it's perfectly normal.

Thank you all for your replies. It's morning now and Lily seems to be fine. It's an incredible relief to know the spotting was/is normal. Isn't this a great website?
