My cat has some stubborn chin acne (it looked like coffee grounds) so I made a vet appointment for Saturday. (My vet has terrible hours and I have to go Saturdays or take time off work) (And I threw out all the plastic bowls and wash them daily) I went away this weekend and my parents watched Libby at my house. I come home and her chin acne seems to have morphed into scab looking things. I'm really scared. I think the stress of my being away made it worse! Should I take her to the vet earlier? It doesn't seem to bother her at all. I'm really scared. My last kitty was at the vet all the time and was sick and had to be put to sleep. I don't want that for my new baby!

It probably was not the stress. When it gets bad, it will look like scabs, they they might even start scratching at it. To get it cleared up, you can either just wash the area once or twice a day with a mild soap making sure to rinse it, or clean it with benzoyl peroxide.

What are you feeding your kitty? If the chin is scabby and loosing fur it could be ringworm (stress can cause cats to brake out with this fungus) and you should also test for that as well.

I feed her Iams dry food and either Iams wet in the pouches or Natural Choice from the pouches. ( I know these are not the best foods, but they are the only ones she will eat and not throw up) My last cat had ringworm also, I remember. I put cream on him twice a day and it cleared up. That was around last summer. It was a pain but it went away.

I am so sorry that you lost your other kitty.

You were wise to get rid of her plastic bowls. It is important to keep our cat's food & water bowls very clean. Bacteria in unclean bowls is a common cause of cat acne. Also, it's possible that your kitty might be sensitive to something in her food.
Be sure to keep us posted on your furbabies progress. We all learn from each other. I will be praying for you both.

When one of ours got chin acne, it got worse before it got better. Truly, the vet is not going to do anything that you cannot do yourself with help from other people that have experienced it...so you might as well save your money.

I mean, if they are huge and bloody or something, that is different...but if we are talking about clumps of BB sized scabs on the chin, it takes awhile for it to clear up...I think it was 2 months before we got rid of the case here.

Iams is a very oily food, and probably causing her pores to clog. Keep cleaning her chin, and it should resolve.

I would never discourage someone from taking their baby to the vet if they thought it necessary, but I have to agree with 5catsandcountin. I took Logan in just in time for them to tell me to keep doing what I was doing.

Get a soft washcloth and some baby soap (we used BabyMagic) and wash his chin once or twice a day. When they got scabby, I actually scrubbed it a little to get the crusties off. (Gross, sorry) They went away in about 2 weeks. Our vet did say that if it gets bad to use Stridex pads for Sensitive Skin (no alcohol).

You didn't really do anything to cause this, it is pretty common in white-faced cats. Just keep the bowls and the chins clean and all will be fine!

Feel free to PM me w/ questions, we just went through this about 4 weeks ago.
