I know that there are safe products to use as a sunscreen for cats but can anyone tell me what is best? Persil's pink ears are at real risk here, and my brother is coming out from the UK in two weeks and he could bring me something that is not available here. Any advice? And should I apply it to the outside as well as the inside of her ears? Nose?

I am not real good with the brands, but the best are the ones made for children. They are safe, and they have a high UV rating.
It's a good idea to put it on the ears and the nose, just make sure and rub it in until it dissapears.

Jamie's one ear is half white, and my vet told me I could use any child's sunscreen on it, and to apply it on the outside, and the upper part of the inside where his skin is pink. He won't let me put it on his pink nose. I'm using some stuff I picked up in the States, called SolBar (SF 50), but I'm pretty sure Nivea has a child's sunscreen.

The only advice I have for you is to keep your kitties indoors... espically your pure white one.

I lost Marshmallow last year to skin cancer (squamous cell carcinoma). We had to have his left ear flap removed when we first got him because it was being overtaken by a large ulcer. Months later, a little cut he had on his nose opened up and started to consume his entire nose. After treating him for a few months the cancer spread into in lymph nodes... he couldn't breath well so he wasn't eating... and we had to let him go. He lived outside for at least 5 years before my husband and I rescued him from the streets.

It's a horrible thing to have to go through, espically since it could have been prevented if his first owners didn't dump him.

Please, keep all of your kitties indoors. (=

Jillian - thanks for your comments and I am sorry for your loss of Marshmallow. As this is Persil's first summer I hope to keep her safe by applying cream, and by keeping her in during the real heat of the day. My working hours allow for this. Next year she will be in a cooler climate and a lower altitude, in France, though of course I will continue to use the cream. Thanks Sandie and Jcat for the reassurance that I can use children's products on her, I was not sure.

Just wanted to say don't use anything labeled sunscreen for humans on dogs or cats.  The zinc oxide is toxic to them. So make sure that you find a product just for pets.
