GONNA BE A TRUCKER!!! Ha Ha

My father lives in Calgary and offered Darrell and I jobs with pick-up trucks doing pick-up and delivery. (P & D)

I've already got my truck - it's a 97 Dodge Diesel Dually Flatdeck!! HAR HAR HAR I can't help but laugh over the situation. Little 'ol me behind some big steering wheel yelling curses out the window and spitting out of the left side of my mouth... HAHAHA. It's got a 12 foot flatdeck. 8 feet wide!!

Farmers tan,
steel toe boots,
red flannel shirt,
hard hat...ppppsnicker. This is gonna be great. I threatened to paint my truck powder pink! I just might do it too.

I don't need a special licence for it because it doesn't have air brakes and it's not Big Rig stuff. Just picking up and delivering mostly construction items. All around Calgary.

We move, with all three cats, on June 3rd. We're driving with my new(ish) Dodge and our 93 Ford Explorer. Most of the stuff will be on the top of the Ford so the cats can have the maximun amount of walking space inside as possible. We're going ot be driving at night...all night... so there will be the least amount of traffic to deal with.

They say from Victoria to Calgary is 12 hours. Twelve hours... I've never driven more than two at any one time. And never at night. But there will be my father and my husband between two vehicles so we can switch off as needed.

So is there anyone here from Calgary??

Thanks for listening guys and I hope you have gotten as many giggles out of this as I have.

That sounds like fun. I have a friend who's from Calgary. I think you'd better prepare yourself for snow, snow, and more snow! He goes into hysterics when he hears Europeans describe 5 or 6 inches of snow as a "blizzard".

Are you going to start chewing tobacco? Just for the sake of image. And don't forget to start a collection of caps.

chewing tobacco?? EW! But of course for the sake of image...
I have to invest in a few stylish cowboy hats too! Gotta have one to match my truck, one to match some boots...two colors to match my cats... HAHA. No just kidding.

and about the snow... I AM going to miss the year round lushness of Victoria... but I grew up in North Bay, Ontario. So I'm quite used to snow. and I can't wait for the electrical storms. It's been quite some time since I've seen lightening.

Whatever.
Tricia (jcat), you live in Germany and from what I understand, are a former American. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

I lived in Calgary for many years, and those stereotypes are ridiculous. I don't know who the hell makes them up. Actually, Calgary has a great arts community, and many of my friends there are left-wingers. In addition, most people who wear cowboy hats only do so during Stampede and though I imagine many people in rural Alberta chew tobacco, Calgary is not rural. I think people are envious of Calgary because it has a great small town vibe in the big city life, it's clean and sunny, is close to the Rockies, and has one of the lowest unemployment rates in Canada.

Tamme, I'm sure you'll be happy there. And I bet the cats will love all the sun! Of course, like any city, Calgary will have its negatives, but it's an overall nice place to live. Best of luck.

Believe me, North Bay gets WAY more snow than Calgary!
Don't forget those Alberta chinooks.
Sure, the temperatures may dip to crazy extremes, but I can assure you there will be days during the winter when there will be no snow on the ground and will only need to wear a sweater. Can you say that about North Bay? I think not.
And again, think of ALL the sun you'll get.
It will help you get out of the winter blahs I know we experience here in Ontario.

I believe you've misunderstood my post, or are doing your own stereotyping. Since Tamme started with the steel-toed boots, etc., I was simply contributing to, and making fun of, the trucker "stereotypes". I'm not a "former" American, but an American who happens to live in Germany, just as my friend is a Canadian who happens to live here. From what he's told me about Calgary, it sounds like a great place to live. I work with another Canadian (from Alberta), and the two of us constantly laugh about Europeans' idea of "bad, hot, or cold weather", since the climate here is rather mild. I wasn't knocking Canada, but I find it disturbing when people who have little or no experience of the modern-day country I live in feel justified in doing their own "knocking" of it, or of anybody who lives here.

Tamme! I live about 2 1/2 hours from Calgary and am up there all the time!

If you want the electrical storms you'll have to come down to Medicine Hat (where I am). In Calgary the mountains can block some of the sheet lightning but with absolutely nothing here all you can see is sky

Also I drive to Kelowna all the time and the drive is long but it is SO pretty!
Try to leave when it is still dark there so you don't hit the mountains in the dark. You don't want to miss seeing everything there is along HWY 1.
You will love it in Calgary!
Maybe we can get together one weekend

Good luck with the move and have fun driving that truck!
Go for hot pink though. Powder pink is too subtle.

Thanks guys for all of the support. You're the best!

I apologize if my generalized stereotyping offended anyone but it's a way for me to have a little fun with the stressful times of turning my life up-side-down. Trying to make a silver lining if you will. I lived in Calgary 4 years ago and I realize that it's not all like that - just trying to have a laugh at myself.

I'm trying to get the cats used to being in the car. I take them for rides once in a blue moon, which I know, I should try and do more often but I try to do it only when there is a short ride planned and usually when I drive - it's to work. We decided it would be less stressful for them to be able to walk about the back of the explorer with a litter than to be kept in a confined area, since they've never had the opportunity to be crate trained. They can't crawl under the front seats because the seats are all powered and there is too much mechanical stuff under there for them to even get their noses in. So I figure it's safe enough.

I figured powder pink would be good because it's understated. I might even go super-styled and have a white truck with white pearl flames with pink pearl tips. HAHA Oh my!

Ok, talk to y'all in a bit...oops no pun intended lol
