Hi everyone

I imagine this has been done before, but at any rate, I thought starting a poetry "therapy" thread would be a great idea.

As many of us TCS'ers are going through our own healing processes in relation to various hurts, traumas, and life transitions, I thought this thread would give everyone the opportunity to channel those thoughts and feelings.

And remember, poetry is subjective... Whether it's sad or happy, it can be a source of deep inspiration. Mine will often be serious, but lighthearted poems and quotes are most welcome!

Include any poems you like, whether they are your own (this is NOT a contest!), or if it's by a poet you admire. Be sure to cite the poet's name.

I'm going to start off with a poem by Edgar Allen Poe.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alone
From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then - in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life - was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.
here's one my husband wrote
terrified plaster covered chickens run through my mind
bowled over by marbles
i eat eggs for breakfast
railroad spike stuck in my brain
causes cataclismic explosions of thought
wants, desires, needs, are swallowed by the faded pink walls
only to be dispersed again in patterns and colors that crawl all around the room
forestry was always my strength, yet, somehow i'm lost
elephants on parade with pig trainers, and monkeys with batons in suits
this dynamite in my stomach just might explode
i hope it's soon cause i'm bored
Under the cats, mostly.
This does actually have music to go with it. I wrote it a long time ago - as you can guess, I was pretty deeply hurt
****
Faith, Hope and Chastity
I wanna be alone, wanna live my fears
Wanna take the time
To erase the years
From my mind; forget we ever were.
I wanna be my own, wanna mend my heart
Wanna take the faith
That tears me apart
When you're with, when you're round, when you're in love with her.
And so I'll chase the rain forever, just to hide my tears
I'll show you that I'm stronger than you think
Take me to the brink
Of destruction.
So I'll chase the dark eternal, just to face my fears
I'll show you that I don't need your pity
I'll live in faith, hope
And chastity.
I wanna live my life, wanna be the one
Wanna find solace
In everything done
in the face of the person I was
I wanna change my ways, gonna be what you
Couldn't see in me
Gonna make it through
And be all the woman you never thought I'd be
I'll chase the rain forever, just to hide my tears
I'll show you that I'm stronger than you think
Take me to the brink
Of destruction.
I'll chase the dark eternal, just to face my fears
I'll show you that I don't need your pity
I'll live in faith, hope
And chastity.
In the night, all alone I can feel myself falling
For the man that you were, hear you calling
To me.
But when I wake with the dawn,
The feeling is gone
And I've made it through another lonely night
And I'm alright
I'll chase the rain forever, just to hide my tears
I'll show you that I'm stronger than you think
Take me to the brink
Of destruction.
I'll chase the dark eternal, just to face my fears
I'll show you that I don't need your pity
I'll live in faith, hope
And chastity.
In faith, hope
And chastity.
Ok, I never did manage the chastity bit, but it sounded good at the time!
Listen
with the night falling we care saying thank you
we are stopping on the bridge to bow from the railings
we are running out of glass rooms
with our mouths full to look at the sky
and say thank you
we are standing by the water looking out
in different directions
back from a series of hospitals back from a mugging
after funerals we are saying thank you
after the news of the dead
whether or not we knew them we are saying thank you
in a culture up to its chin in shame
living in the stench it has chosen we are saying thank you
over telephones we are saying thank you
in doorwars and in the backs of cars and in elevators
remembering wars and the police at the back door
and the beatings on stairs we are saying thank you
in the banks that use us we are saying thank you
with the crooks in office with the rich and fashionable
unchanged we go on saying thank you thank you
with the animals dying around us
our lost feelings we are saying thank you
with the forests falling faster than the minutes
of our lives we are saying thank you
with the words going out like cells of a brain
with the cities growing over us like the earth
we are saying thank you faster and faster
with nobody listening we are saying thank you
we are saying thank you and waving
dark though it is
My pleasure!
Although the mods moved the thread so there won't be as much traffic as I had hoped...
I'll post another poem when I get back from the doctor's.
STARLIGHT
(c) Laura Stamps
Full moon, an hour before
dawn, and the sudden tinkle
of someone's cell phone
twinkles under the humid
canopy of frog-murmur and
wing-sputter. May I never
be stricken immune to the
wonder of this kitten curled
in my arms, his soft breath
a sleeping meditation and
a testimony to the tiny
psalm of peace seeding this
moment. Like the pinprick
of a star licking the dark-
ness. Look can you see it?
I like this thread! Thought I would add a poem - well a song actually, That i love.
By Michael Jackson
"Smile"
Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
You'll get by...
If you smile
With your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just...
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just...
Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
You'll get by...
If you smile
Through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile...
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
I am not a poet,
but I enjoy reading your poetry.
I wrote this poem long ago,
when I was a child.
Grain clad fields,
suckling Mother Sun,
the communion of life,
forever........One.
Actually, it's a lot older than that...
Smile
Great song. No wonder it's still around and appreciated.
I never share my poetry with anyone, as it's an intensely personal form of therapy for me. But seeing as I have some degree of anonymity here, this is the second part of a poem I wrote recently.
Dadâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s vibrant, soothing voice and the tanned dimples beneath his laughing grey eyes
Neil Young resonates from the radio while driving through mountainous passages
Beauty in the form of nature grace my senses in every single direction I glance
Perfect red tulips, flickering of a scented candle, silvery sheen of fur warmed by a ray of sun
Silent hope for a profound happiness I would patiently await
A guiding path free of thorns to the lingering light of a radiant love
Here's a silly little poem I wrote a couple days after I got my first two cats, who were young and active at night, keeping me awake:
OH, LITTLE KITTIES
Oh, little kitties,
What are you doing tonight?
Will you play?
Or will you fight?
Little soft thumps
And small dark bumps.
Brave, little grrrrs,
And happy, big purrs.
Little cats
Grow up fast.
Soon too big
For kitty acts.
So, snooze all day
For night-time play.
Your eyes can see
Much more than me.
So whatâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]s the flap?
Youâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]ll snooze real soon
Upon my lap;
A grown-up cat.
(be gentle, I don't usually write poetry
)
Tear-stained Pillow
...for Adrian
I know I'm nothing in your eyes
despite your words to my painful cries
I'll never live up to your expectations
the memories and the old relations
I'm fighting to keep my composure
patiently awaiting a day of closure
I long for you as you long for her
will we ever be as you two were?
I know you dream of her at night
Don't lie to me or try to fight
I see the distance in your eyes
While we're layin side-by-side
I sense your pain and frustration
trying to hide the contemplation
Hoping she'll walk back through the door
and everything will be just like before
So I lay here with you and pretend
one day you'll receive the love I send
Slowly learning how to shield my heart
fighting to keep from falling apart
You'll never really know the pain I feel
though you see the tears I try to conceal
You'll never understand the cries I bellow
as I lay my head on a tear-stained pillow
I write a lot of poetry..
"Forever Lost"
By: Lil Axl Gurl
No matter how many tears I cry,
none seem to remove the love I have,
for you.
Estranged plays in the background,
and I scream and shout,
dropping to the floor.
Days go by, it seems I have forgotten,
about you.
Then Estranged plays again,
and I am reminded,
about you.
My love for you returns to me.
It will not leave no matter how loud I scream.
I shout.
I cry.
I don't want to leave you.
I'd rather die.
I call you up begging to have you back.
Estranged plays in the background,
as you say "No."
You never loved me.
And my love for you, so well had I shown.
Estranged plays in the background,
as I lay on the floor.
Estranged plays in the background,
as my tears stream away.
Estranged plays in the background.
as I hear a knocking on the door.
I lay myself down again.
I don't want an enemy.
I don't want a friend.
I just want you love,
but we have come to an end.
Estranged plays in the background,
as the phone rings.
I lift myself up,
checking the caller ID.
I bring myself down,
seeing it's not you.
My head by the speakers.
Estranged plays so loud.
Estranged plays so clear.
Estranged is my way of saying,
that I want you here.
Have you gotten my message, love?
Do you hear it?
I'm missing you, love!
I need you to hear it!
This beautiful feeling, love.
With you I want to share it.
I'm sorry that I lied to you, love.
At least in the end,
I told the truth.
I thought honesty would bring us closer.
Apparently not to you.
Estranged still plays in the background,
and I still lay on the floor.
I close my eyes drifting away,
to a much happier place.
Happy I will never be again,
as yet another tear streams down my face.
I dream of you, holding my hand.
I dream of you, petting my cat.
I dream of us, sharing a home.
I dream of us, no longer alone.
Estranged plays again,
and I am brought back to life.
I cry more and more.
Screaming louder and louder.
Oh why did you leave me my love?
Was I not supportive enough?
Oh why did you leave me my love?
Did I break your trust?
You should know how bad you've broken my heart.
How bad you've torn me apart.
I can't believe I'm right back at start!
Did my love mean nothing to you?
Estranged plays in the background,
as I still grieve.
I feel you've taken away,
a piece of me.
Will I ever be myself again?
Or have I completely come to an end?
Will I ever again be me?
Estranged fades in the background,
as I think to myself.
Without you my love.
I am forever lost.
Coiled round the spindle,
The deposition presses
Raising your mast to wax,
Sack
And
Seize
The blistered red spun seed.
Your hydrophobic finger moulders,
And
It scrapes.
Where fin scrubs fin,
Sweaty needles luminate.
Volcanic lips
chew finger tips
Fused into these cloisters.
Slipping
And
A
Buzzing
in,
surging war time shelters.
The Bough is peeled back
And
Disarmed,
ducting condiments
And brackish charms.
The stuffy trace,
of the daggers race,
Dips
And
Drones
And
Then Embalms.
Shifting grazes.
Shifting gazes
Face
And
Eyes cast isolated.
I turn to the dark.
Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m returning for more.
Iâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]m coming to suck
The sea from the shore.
----Zazi
This free verse started a long time ago. I've been coming back to it ever since... Everytime i write it, it gets altered a little. It was recently featured in a book called "The Voice Within". This is the version that was published.
