Hello i have a 4 year old persain cat named puff and lately he has been acting very strange. A couple times a day he is stopped dead in his tracks and gets really low to the ground and breathes fast and hard out of his nose as his whole body shakes. The episodes usually last 30 seconds to a minute and a some mucas comes out of his nose during the fit and he looks as if he's chocking. It sounds as if his nasal passage is obstructed when he breaths at night and he has been meowing very loud and often during the day, often times just a few minutes before a fit. I have had some very bad experiences with bringing him to the vet always charges a ton of money and puff rarely shows improvement. A few months ago he stopped eating and was vomiting yellow bil and the i payed the vet over 200 and he gave me some antibiotics that didn't seem to do anything. I did extensive research online and found that it was probably froma toxicity from the byproducts in the foods i was giving him and also possibly caused by the litter he used that had clumping agents so now he's on natural everything and i'd rather try and diagnose the problem and purchase meds then shell out a bunch more cash i don't have for merger resutls. Thanks in advance and i stumbled on to this site its AWESOME!!

I know this is not what you want to hear, but is there another vet you could talk to? It does sound as if he needs medical attention. Maybe you could find one and speak on the phone about their standard charges (for visits, examinations etc) before going in. It could be very dangerous for your cat if you try to self-diagnose and treat him with over the counter meds. Good luck.

Poor Puff! I agree with Jenny. Call around and find another vet.

So glad you've joined us! Good for you for researching and wanting only the best for Puff! Is there a Feline Specialist in your area? Puff definitely to be treated by a Professional, and it's possible a Specialist will be more familiar wit Puff's situation. Please do keep us update how he's feeling!

Thanks for the repsonses. I actually looked into a pet specific vet in my area but they are closed todya. I did extensive research last night and think he has some type of respitory problem or alergy. So last night i put him in a room with a humidifier. His breathing is through his nose seems to have lost its whistle. I just want to know if anyone has had similar symtoms so i know what i'm getting myself into. cash is really tight right now so i was just hoping to find someone who had an idea of what was wrong so i could buy him is meds from vetmeds.com. THanks in advance.

You need to be careful self prescribing and medicating without a vet. Vets are needed because they have hands on evaluations. Meds are prescribed based on the cat's health, and weight as well as other factors. It does not sound like an URI from what you describe, certainly the green discharge could be, but if this is a an extreme-faced persian, you could have some real problems here. You should seek out a vet you are comfortable with, and not let money be the guiding force. Pets are a huge responsibility. They look to us to do the right thing when they are ill. There is also a danger of buying meds for pets over the internet. Sometimes you are not getting the drug, but a "knock off" a counterfeit. My email bin gets heart wrenching letters from time to time from people trying to save money, only to have it cost their cat's life-

Please see this article, perhaps it might help you in the future. And please get Puff to a vet on Monday-

Hello and thanks for the reply. After scowering the forums i've found you to be very helpful and figured it was just a matter of time before you chimed in. Its not green mucas just some buggers that are forced out when he's having a fit. Be just pushes air out of his nose repeadedly. He's not an extreme faced persian his nose isn't pushed in at all its quite normal for a persain. Another thing i've noticed is there is a pretty fowl ordor when you get up next to his nose and smell as he breathes out. Besides for the episodes that happen a couple times per day he is acting normal as can be eating, playing running around, wanting to constatntly sit on someones lap, trying to sneak up on birds on the deck etc... I really don't have the money to take him to the vet and havn't ever had any positive behavior or prognosis from a vet visit. I have looked into cat specific vets on the site you recommended to someone in another thread and found a couple in my area but still the money right now is an issue. I'm goinig to call one of them tomorrow and see there fees/plans, but just dont' know what i'm going to do? So noone has ever heard of such a situation? /thanks again for everyones responses i appreciate your concernn and will keep you updated on his condition. Also anyone know how i can post a pic off my computer onto a post so you can see him? Thanks

I do hope you find a solution for Puff. To post a picture you have to save your photos onto an image hosting site like Photobucket.com, and then post hte IMG tag of the photo onto your post. It is free and quite easy.
