Jenny how lovely! You and the kits will be in paradise I'm sure.

Your new pictures of the kits is also wonderful. They are beautiful. I still have a strange love for Persil! Weird woman right?

Thank you for sharing the pictures. We can all live vicariously through you. It really sounds like a piece of heaven.

I agree, TCS convention at Jenny's! Yeah!

It's beautiful, Jenny! Watch out - we're within driving distance. Actually, if you and the "girls" would like to visit Germany, you're quite welcome to visit us (Stuttgart area).
You're about to live my dream - retiring to a farm in a picturesque area with shops in the vicinity. I've got Scotland in mind, while my husband is tending towards Hungary. His parents bought a house with a good piece of land in Hungary over a decade ago, and now the big question is whether they should sell it, or we should take it, and plan on moving there in about 15 years.

It's really hard to decide where to live when you retire, or start working from home (both, in my case!) I need quiet, mountains/hills, water, access to facilities, a warm but not extreme climate ( I have had enough rain/snow/burning sun) and a totally cat-safe environment. I thought about Slovenia, Austria and even staying in Bosnia. I am at odds with Britain and I do not want to go back there, for financial, political and cultural reasons. Bosnia is just too far from friends and family and though I love it here, it is still an alien culture for me. In Slovenia or Austria I would have to learn another language and I decided I couldn't cope with that yet again. I speak French, I know and like French people and culture, and the environment/climate are just right. I think you have to put down the must-haves and the no-nos and stick to them - after all, this could be for the rest of your life and there is no time/money to waste.

Those are the factors we're considering. I would love to move to the Salzburg area, but my husband is a bit biased against Austrians, although he can't explain why. I'd be lost in France, because of the difficult language. Britain doesn't seem at all foreign to me, but my husband would probably face some discrimination because of his nationality. We'd both like to live in "the middle of nowhere", but in a country where we'd both be reasonably competent with the language. We'll probably end up in Britain, Hungary, Canada, or the U.S..

Jcat, if your husband is German I don't think he would face discrimination in Britain. I don't want to go back there because 1) it is now horribly expensive, 2) it seems to be a 'yob culture' where education and intellectualism are sneered at and everything goes down to the lowest common denominator, 3) the climate is miserable and 4) I am horrified at the dirt and unkempt look of all the cities: even Sarajevo, with its war damage, looks more cared for. I think it is important to end up somewhere where you are comfortable with the culture, and a common language does not necessarily guarantee that. So many people fall in love with a location, move there and are miserable because they know no-one and cannot fit in with the norms and customs. If you go to live somewhere, it is up to you to adjust, not to expect the locals to. Oh dear, I didn't mean to write a sermon!
