Since my female cat was a baby, she's ALWAYS been spilling her water, I went online and made a little searched and the only thing I found was that sometimes water can have some chemicals that my cat would find offensive. So I right away I got her bottled water, but she still did it! so I went and even got her Penta water, BUT SHE STILL DOES IT! and what I notice is that when she is drinking the water, she scratches the floor...

what the heck is wrong with her?

I certainly not an expert, but I had more then one cat that scratched the floor while it was drinking and my cat Crybaby actually puts her one paw in the dish when she drinks, of course then she also puts BOTH her paws in the feeding dish when she eats too! LOL

Maybe your cat just likes to play with water. I keep the water in a big heavy ceramic dish. I notice that alot of cats like to play with their water and this keeps them from spilling it. My Ragdoll insists on drinking out of the faucet in the tub. She also puts her paw into the bowl and licks the water off her paw. All my cats scratch the floor while they are drinking. And some of them try to bury their food after they eat. I believe it's all just instinct.

ahhh... I see. My cat loves drinking water, but I have to make sure her bowl is full and clean, or else she will get messy! lol. I just never understood that, it's kind of cute.

I read somewhere that cats like to test their water with a paw to make sure it is OK - not syre if this innate or learned behaviour. So it really is nothing to worry about. And bottled water is best!

Chuckie does that too! I used to have a cat that would only drink from a faucet and my vet told me that some cats can't see water so it has to be moving so they can see where it is to drink it.

Sam is a functional water drinker, but Frodo seems to have such a hard time. He's so very slow and not really effective at all. I mean, he gets enough water, but it takes him at least three times as long to drink as his brother. He even used to try to steal water from Sam's mouth when they both had their heads down there. Poor thing! Maybe his mom forgot to show him how to do it correctly?

It's as if they have to test it first, lol My Siamese drinks only bottled water and if by accident she gets tap water, she puts her paw in and she won't drink it. (I think she would if she was really thirsty but hopefully it won't ever come to that!)

I recently read an article that said a cats instinct to bury food kicks in whenever they can smell it but aren't eating it at that moment.

So, the article went on to say if the water dish is next to the food the smell can trigger their instinct, and their urge to bury actually sometimes stops them from drinking even when they are thirsty. Trying to bury the food may be what's spilling the water.

After reading the article I moved my cat's water to another room away from his food. The water stays clean long and never gets spilled anymore.

I agree with this too...Lovey's water is a permanent fixture on the coffee table at my house. He never has a problem with spillage..He does paw at the table while he drinks and my friends think I am daft for having his water glass on the table (but who cares?)...Especially the friend who drank out of his glass one evening by mistake while reaching for her own...
