Hello Everyone

I was just wondering, how long after having kittens can I get mum cat spayed ? and also at what age can you get a kitten spayed ?

I'll probably wait until the kitten (Kiki) is old enough and take them both in at the same time. Aw, my house wil be so quiet !

When we had a feral & her kittens in our house, we managed to get the mother cat to be spayed (she was not tame & didn't hang around after the kits had gone). I think this was done while the kittens were about 7 or 8 weeks old.

If you wait until the kitten is old enough, you may find thatyour unspayed female is already pregnant again!

in the uk the youngest they will do it is 5 months for a male and 6 for a female.

my vet wants me to wait until the kitten (she only had one) is 14 weeks before we spay the mum but its up to each individual vet. some do it at 6 weeks. if its done any earlier you have to bottle feed the kittens whilst mums away.

keep mum indoors because she can go into heat and get pregnant before you have a chance to spay her.

i suggest you ring your vet to ask their policies and come to an arrangement that suits you.

5 months is a long time ! perhaps I should get Dee (mum) spayed sooner than that ! I'm not having another litter ! I dont' think my boyfriend would be best pleased ! Actually, I dont' think Dee would be pleased either !

Thanks for the advice, and have a good weekend

Carla xx

p.s I'll try to get some photos of the kittens soon

I volunteer for an animal rescue organization and we spay the males as early as 12 weeks old and the females arounf 14 weeks old. But our animals run free and we can't take the chances of them getting pregnant. All vets are different though =)

I'm sorry, but your mom cat had kittens before she was 5-6 months old? They didn't mean you have to wait an addititional 5 months after the kittens are born, you can get her spayed now if you wish. The kittens should be done at 6 months old. Some vets will do them a lot sooner- you should ring your vet and ask him what age he will consider spaying kittens. Even if the kittens are still nursing, mom's milk will drop again after surgery, but it is best to wait till the kittens are on canned food. Keep the momcat inside, or she will become pregnant again- "tis the season!"
