Hi,

My cat Ellie is in heat (never had a cat before) and I was wondering if there is anything that I could do that could comfort her. The poor thing cries and is just not herself. I feel bad. I asked my vet and she told me there was nothing. I just wanted to ask here.

Thanks

I've never dealt with a cat in heat before, but, from reading this forum I've learned that confining Ellie in a coolish, dim room might help. Make sure that her litterboxes are in the room with her, and also her food and water dishes (place the dishes as far from the box as possible). Include lots of toys and some comfortable bedding. If there are neighborhood cats that she can see from the windows, closing the blinds might help her a bit, too. Other than that (plus the rescue remedy mentioned above), you'll just have to wait it out.

Maybe this is obvious, but the only way to keep this from happening again is to spay her. If you're worried about the cost, there are low-cost spay/neuter clinics and programs in most areas--some are even free. If you adopted Ellie from a shelter, call them and ask for referrals, or try asking your vet.

Here's a link to low-cost programs in Illinois. Good luck!
