We have recently taken in a sick stray cat-I have threads about him in the stray/feral section, his story is kind of a long one.
The vet's first diagnosis was a lung infection. (the others being that he could have asthma, or the beginnings of cancer)
Anyway, a PM from another member brought up the question of abuse...we live in a neighborhood where anything could have happened to him, he was outside all the time.
If he was kicked in his side, could an injury like that cause a lung infection?
The x-rays didn't show the vet anything abnormal but his air sacs are clogged, for lack of a better explanation.
I'm going to call the vet tomorrow & ask questions along this line, but wanted to see if you guys had any ideas about this.

I don't think the abuse is the cause of the lung problem. It's more likely that he had/has an upper respiratory infection that settled in his chest similar to pneumonia. The cloudiness in the lungs could also be asthma.

A serious kick can rupture the diaphragm - it was one thing the vet considered as the cause of Persil's hernia (they accused me of abuse!), but that shows up immediately on an Xray. Then the internal organs get sucked up into the chest, causing breathing problems. It can often be mended with surgery.
