I've been reading about the topic to death over the internet, it's almost a toss up if the rx food makes a differance or not. My cat does not really like any of the rx foods, dry or soft. I'm wondering if a good quality moist food, good vet care would be just as good?

I had a cat with CRF and he wouldn't eat the food from the vet so the vet told me to find a food he would eat that had low protien levels. I think it was 8% or less, but I'm not a hundred percent certain as it was about 5 years ago.

I am now home cooking for mine ... I will look the link up if you want... What are your babys scores?? some dry foods on the market will work for early stage... Pm me if you want to know those
... Canned cat foods are quite high since the moisture is about 75=84%... you have to multiple the prtien on the can by 3-3.5 to get the dry protien... I am far from an expert but my girl is still here after 2.5 yrs past diagnoises

Hi,
I do not feed Patrick prescription foods, instead I use the katkarma lists to try and feed foods that are under 1.0 in phosphorus content - in part because Patrick's bun was not that high, nor his creatinine, and he's been quite stable for almost 3 years now.

He is on calcitriol which I believe has helped a great deal - the Katkarma lists were just updated and are now not as extensive, the old lists are also still viewable, and I'd use those too:Katkarma dry foods list and Katkarma Canned Foods list

To be honest, I don't know. Seems like a lot of vets are not into it - the calcitriol list on yahoogroups is excellent, not the least because *the* vet on the topic, Dr. Nagode is on the list and very generous with his time - I believe he will even talk with your vet (don't quote me on that! I may be mis-remembering). I would recommend joining this list.
