I use mostly dry food. I have been reading that it goes stale fairly quickly. I buy a bag that lasts one month. I have been storing a few days of the food, after the bag has been opened, in a plastic container. As I use it up...there is a gap from the top of the jar to the food. The rest in the bag...is sealed up again. I'm concerned that maybe the food in the jar, where oxygen gets to it, might not be fresh.

How do you store your dry food? What is the best way to keep it fresh?

I store mine in a storage container that I got a Petco/Petsmart (one or the other) that is air tight and designed to hold pet food. It's like a rubbermaid tub. It does a pretty good job and the cats love to watch me fill it up.

We store ours in a large plastic bin made for catfood. OIur cats love to watch us fill it up as well.

I would not worry about freshness...I have a girlfriend who had two cats live to be 20-21 and she kept a large bag of the cheapest food open, wide open...and her cats were always very healthy.

Point, humans have been keeping cats as pets for decades and they did pretty darn well...plastic bins and all the health food are relatively new...having air get to the food is not going to kill our cats....sometimes I think we fret too much.

I agree, cats have been companions for decades but they spent most of their time outside.

I'm sure that you know, the litter box, a fairly recent invention, enabled cats to live their lives indoors. As a result, some cats do live well into their 20's. My furbabies are indoor only. Because they cannot supplement their diet by hunting, they are dependent on how & what I feed them.

I'm sure that you feel the same...we want our furbabies to have the best lives that we can give them.
Their food is a major component of their wellbeing.
I am under my furbabies spell.

PS...How do you store the food for your two headed cat? Great picture.

I keep the food in the original bag. I roll down the top of the bag, pressing out the extra air and put a clothes pin on it. I also keep the bag in a heavy duty plastic container.

we just use a rubbermaid container that is made to hold cereal (complete with pouring spout!)

we haven't noticed any problems with freshness
