If it's during class, the teacher has every right to redirect the class back onto subject matter that deals with what the class was about. And I'm pretty sure the guy wasn't teacher a class on the history of pets so he should have done his job and pulled the conversation back onto class related subjects.

That's exactly what I was thinking Tracey! What a great teaching moment....totally lost. It could have been related to how the Nazis viewed Jews and Gypsys and homosexuals, or how early Americans viewed their slaves. Any number of examples of persecuted peoples could have been used to make the point that no animal deserves to be treated like that!

Well I am an animal Lover, But mostly I Love the Cats, I still beleive that Cats do not get the same respect that Dogs do, Or there wouldn't be so many people doing rescue, You don't see to many litters of puppies in parking lots.

How very true. I think that these ignorant people may have formed this poor opinion of cats because you have to EARN respect from a cat, you can't "MAKE" it love you or obey you. And you must have patience and consistancy in YOUR love, because a cat remembers if you abuse it. Sounds like most of these losers will never get a chance to know a cat, because they are so lacking themselves that no cat would WANT THEM. I admire you for not going off on these ignorant people. You can go to college and still be stupid. Your classmates prove that. All I can say is consider the source and don't fall to THEIR level. Hugs.

YOU and the OTHER girl are VERY SPECIAL! ONE day the others WILL regret what they said! I am willling to bet a LOT of the others are just big COWARDS! They DO like cats but are afraid of what the others will say to THEM!

You remember the saying "Them that can do, and them that cannot talk about it! Usually the ones who talk the loudest and meanest are afraid to come out and tell the truth. As much as I disliike them ( putting it nicely!) I DO feel sorry for them. Just think of all the love and happiness these poor people are missing out on. Next time - just look at them and smile! YOU and the OTHER GIrL are the lucky ones!

I don't know how you stayed in that room. Like Traci (Grey Kitten Love), I would have walked out but first I would have make a comment like Think about this...people who abuse animals quite often grow up to be spouse or child abusers. Ladies, you may want to think about that before you accept a date with Mr Pit Bull. And based on this conversation, you're all animal abusers.

He is the one who stopped the disscussion and asked the question... i think we were talking about amendment rights and if you wanted to start your own religion, but the religion involved sacraficing kittens, that the government would not let you do it, then he asked us who liked cats
He is a marvelous teacher though, he just likes to debate, he wants opinions from all sides to be put on the table and discussed, no matter what they are...
he owns three cats, and he considers them disposable pets, but other than that he had nothing to say about them, it was all the students who were talking about them being a nucance(sp?) among other things...

And IMO that is just as bad, even if you are shy, if something you love, like animals and their welfare is being bashed, you should have the balls to stand up to them

A few minutes later, we were discussing something else, and the instructor asked to someone, name a organization that you support, and someone said Cat welfare and rescue, real sarcastically, and half of the class cracked up... now i took that to be very offensive... so all of a sudden the welfare of a living being is a joke...

had i not still been paralyzed by the previous conversation, i would have got up and left...

It's sad, I feel sorry for those people.

I also wonder if it's a group mentality thing, more may care about cats but didn't want to rock the boat and raise their hands.

This is true. Im taking a giant leap here in telling you all that when I was a kid I LOVED every animal EXCEPT cats. I would take in every stray dog and every baby bird and every lizard. But I HATED cats. I hated them because I loved birds. I hated them because they seemed stuck up. I hated them mostly because I never really owned one I guess. Then I got a cat later when I was an adult and it was all over for me. They are one of my most favorite animals. I regret all of the time the way I treated cats when I was a kid and they way I used to view them.

They have won me over totally. Now im making cat furniture for a living and breed bengals. I think if a lot of these people were exposed to cats they would change thier mind!

Just because you love birds, does not automatically mean you hate cats!

If someone mentions that they hate cats or about hurting cats, I DO NOT hold back. People laugh at me and call me a crazy cat lady but I don't care I stick up for all cats. One d**khead in my class said "Haha you have those ugly squashed faced poncy cats aye, well my cat could smash your cat in a fight" Some people are so inconsiderate.

Ya know how I see it? That 2 people out of 50 liked cats, right? Well that's just in one classroom in your school.

Now turn your focus on TCS. Now think of all the cat lovers here!

Yes, maybe it's just not considered "cool' to love cats in such a group mentality. That guy probably made that ignorant remark about pit bulls because they are supposed to be the cool animal to have, with the macho hip-hop(or whatever you'd call it) mentality.

I think you did the right thing by staying mostly quiet if you had lost your temper. When you speak, you must say the right thing to be able to convince people. Now you have time (and input from TCS) to prepare a good argument for the future.

Certain people, like pitbull guy, say anything for a response. Like a troll on a message board, the best defense is ignoring him. Nothing you say to him will make a difference. But if it comes up again in conversation, you can use some ideas you prepare to convince some others of the value of cats.

I would aim for a goal of not abusing cats. Who cares if someone likes them or not? As long as they don't bother the cats, right. And the teacher may believe his pets are disposable, but I'll bet someone else at his house disagrees, and that is the person the cat loves!

Don't take it to personally, prepare yourself for the next time this happens. And exhaust your anger with cat loving friends! Good luck, sounds like you are in with an odd bunch!

Hmmmm... I think you're right about the troll comparison, and good point about aiming for the goal of not abusing cats. Fine if they're all talk, but there better be no action. I think it would also be good to talk to those individuals privately when they don't have an audience and let them know that those kinds of remarks aren't appreciated. I think some of them are true jerks. However, some of them just think they're being funny and might take any comments in private to heart.
