hi all,
my now tamed feral foster mother cat just had her kittens. two are great, but the firstborn (930am this morning cst usa) hasn't eaten yet. his nose is runny, he cries a hearty cry, but he doesn't crawl, he just lies on his side. i've tried putting him onto one of her nipples, and one time he suckled a tiny bit but then stopped. i've read that it could be a uri and i'm afraid of him giving it to the others. any advice would be so appreciated.

Hi Carrie,

First and foremost, keep this baby warm. If you have rice in the house, you can take an old sock and fill it up with rice, tie off the ends and heat in in the microwave for 30 seconds. No more than that. Make several. Get a small box and fill it with soft bedding, and put the rice heaters in the box. Take the kitten, and with a dry washcloth, start rubbing him gently, you want to stimulate him. Do you have a bulb syringe? If you do, try to gently syringe out the nose and the mouth for excess drainage. Then put him next to the rice heaters, call your vet and take him in now- he needs more than you can give him at this point. Cover the box up with a soft towel and don't uncover it again until you arrive at the vet- but go RIGHT AWAY But be sure he travels warm, and does not get cold.

Ok but watch those heating pads, make sure it is buried, because you can burn a baby kitten very easily. Because he is unable to move, he needs vet intervention quickly- that's why the rice heaters are so good, they keep the kitten warm, don't burn him and are so easy and quick to do-

Good luck please let us know what the vet finds-
